Topic: Nitratine

In the News (Fri 25 Dec 09)

NITRATINE OR SODA NITER (Sodium Nitrate)
Nitratine is deliquescent and is very soluble in water and thus care should be taken to preserve valuable specimens in air tight containers with desiccant.
Nitratine is most similar to the trigonal carbonates or those carbonates that belong to the Calcite Group, specifically magnesite, rhodochrosite, siderite, smithsonite, sphaerocobaltite and of course calcite and some rarer members.
The structures of nitratine and the members of the Calcite Group are analogous and they therefore share many similar properties such as symmetry and crystal habits.

Samples of fog water collected near Modena (Po Valley) are found to deposit numerous minerals after evaporation in the laboratory.
The main minerals are nitrammite, mascagnite, koktaite, salammoniac, nitratine, niter, hannebachite, while many others are present, either sporadically and/or in trace form.
Conversely, when fog water evaporation occurs in the field, such minerals, such minerals, which are all hygroscopic and deliquescent, either do not form at all or have a very brief life span.

During the last period, comprising 40 test cycles, the room also had a constant temperature (18°C) but this was done with floor heating.
The salts were identified as trona and nahcolite on two of the walls and halite with some nitratine on the others.
The salts in the test room causing the most severe deterioration are mostly halite and nitratine.

Several mineral species of the nitrate class form structures analogous to certain of the carbonates.
For example, nitratine (or soda niter; NaNO3) and the carbonate calcite (CaCO3) are isostructural and possess the same rhombohedral cleavage...
