Topic: Nitrile

For those of you allergic to latex, nitrile could be the glove material for you
Objective To investigate the puncture resistance of a recently introduced non-latex, nitrile dental glove in comparison with a latex glove worn during routine clinical dental procedures.
The puncture resistance of the nitrile gloves was superior to the puncture resistance of previously tested worn non-latex (vinyl) gloves.
Of 1,020 used nitrile gloves and 1,000 used latex gloves, 5.3% and 1.9% respectively were punctured.

Nitriles in which the -CN group can be thought of as having replaced the -COOH group of a corresponding trivially named carboxylic acid are named by removing "ic acid" or "oic acid" and replacing it with onitrile.
Nitriles are usually less toxic than cyanide salts, although they may contain some of the latter as impurities.
Nitriles are also important laboratory and industrial solvents because of their unusual physical properties.

 an introduction to nitriles
Nitriles contain the -CN group, and used to be known as cyanides.
Nitriles therefore have strong permanent dipole-dipole attractions as well as van der Waals dispersion forces between their molecules.
One of the slightly positive hydrogen atoms in a water molecule is attracted to the lone pair on the nitrogen atom in a nitrile and a hydrogen bond is formed.

 Manufacture of 3-pentene nitrile
The complexes of the organic nitrile with the said cuprous halide are formed by mixing the components, optionally in the presence of a solvent.
Thus, although organic nitriles are formed in the process of this invention, such nitriles, when formed after the initiation of the reaction, are not generally effective in promoting the catalytic effect of the said cuprous halide.
The organic nitrile used to form the complex with the said cuprous halide may be used in approximately stoichiometric amount bearing in mind that each nitrile group of a compound containing more than one such group is capable of forming a complex with copper.
