Nitrilotriacetic Acid and its Salts (IARC Summary & Evaluation, Volume 73, 1999)
Nitrilotriacetic acid is absorbed in mammals, but it is not metabolized and is excreted rapidly by filtration in the kidney.
Nitrilotriacetic acid does not induce developmental toxicity in rats, rabbits or mice exposed during gestation and gave negative results in short-term assays to screen for teratogenesis in two cellular assays in Drosophila larvae and frog embryos.
Nitrilotriacetic acid and its disodium and trisodium salts were not genotoxic in experimental systems in vivo, except that the acid induced aneuploidy in mouse germ cells.

Nitrilotriacetic Acid and its Salts (IARC Summary & Evaluation, Volume 48, 1990)
Nitrilotriacetic acid and its sodium salts have been produced since the 1930s for use as metal chelating agents in household and industrial detergents, industrial water treatment, textile preparation and metal finishing.
Exposure to nitrilotriacetic acid, and presumably to its water-soluble metal complexes, occurs as a result of its presence in household detergents and in drinking-water.
Nitrilotriacetic acid, trisodium salt was tested for carcinogenicity in mice and rats by oral administration.

 United States Patent Application: 0040092031
Conventional nitrilotriacetic acid resin has a positively charged amine linkage that acts as a binding site for any negatively charged molecule which may interfere with the binding of the protein to the coordination sites offered by the immobilized metal.
When the amine is an amino acid such as cystine, homocystine, cysteine, homocysteine, aspartic acid, cysteic acid or an ester thereof such as the methyl or ethyl ester thereof, the reaction advantageously produces a nitrilotriacetic acid derivative.
For example, a nitrilotriacetic acid derivative of cystine may be prepared by combining cystine, an oxoacid such as glyoxylic acid, and a mild reducing agent; alcohol may preferably be included to aid in the clarification of the solution.

Protein-protein interaction studies performed by immobilizing His-tagged Hha on nickel-nitrilotriacetic acid (Ni -NTA) agarose led us to demonstrate that Hha interacts with the nucleoid-associated protein H-NS and that the Hha-H-NS complex is responsible for the thermo-osmotic modulation of the expression of the hemolysin operon in E.
Samples were prepared by mixing equal volumes of a saturated solution of the matrix in 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid in water-acetonitrile (2:1) and a protein solution with a concentration in the range of 1 to 10 µM.
These genetic and biochemical data are consistent with the results obtained from the alignment of the amino acid sequence of the different members of the Hha family and the oligomerization domain of the members of the H-NS family (Fig.

 Thesis ADEME
Study of the nitrilotriacetic acid degradation occurring in Redox Sulphur Recovery Processes
The catalytic process is carried out in two steps: H2S is first absorbed in a ferric chelated complexes solution where H2S is oxidized directly into elemental sulphur, the resulting Fe(II) species being reoxidized by the presence of air in a second step.
However, during this catalytic process, the nitrilotracetic acid (NTA), used as the chelating agent in this application, is degraded during catalytic process, which results in a loss of desulphurization efficiency.
