Niwa Nagahide was one of the key vassals of the Oda clan.
However, unlike Shibata, Niwa knew when to knuckle under, and thus, by 1583, whereas Shibata was dead, Niwa was not.
However, one generation later, the second Edo-era Niwa lord, Mitsushige, was transferred from Shirakawa to Nihonmatsu (still in Mutsu Province), where the family remained until the end of the Edo Period.

He was noticed for his resourcefulness and rose to a high position within a relatively short amount of time.
Despite his peasant lineage, he quickly became one of Oda Nobunaga's most distinguished generals, eventually taking the name Hashiba (the name was made up of two characters, each taken from Oda's two other right-hand men, Niwa Nagahide and Shibata Katsuie) Hideyoshi.
Having won the support of the other two Oda elders, Niwa Nagahide and Ikeda Itsuoki, Hashiba established Hidenobu's position, as well as his own influence in the Oda clan.

In 2001, American air forces, working from outdated and faulty maps, bombed a Red Cross warehouse in Kabul, Afghanistan on then-exiled King Mohammed Zahir Shah's 87th birthday, which was probably not the 'blast' he'd been hoping for.
Several prominent and ghastly historical figures were born on this date, including Japanese warlord Niwa Nagahide in 1535, whose rapid ascension to power and suspicious death could not overcome the fact that his name, the better part of five centuries later, bears an uncanny similarity to the modern term for cheap, faux leather.
Also born today were maligned and oft-unhappy writer Oscar Wilde, Enver Hoxa, the Albanian dictator, and Andrei Chikatilo who made a lot of Russians, mainly prostitutes, runaways, and drifters, very unhappy by killing them.

Niwa Nagahide, Shibate Katsuie, Ikeda Nobuteru and Hashiba Hideyoshi were the most important of these in the 1570's, but the group also includes Tokugawa Ieyasu and Maeda Toshiie of later fame.
These fought under Oda command or independently, conquering many provinces that Nobunaga allowed them to govern in his name, so that by 1582 all of them had obtained their own powerbases.
Niwa Nagahide is well known for his good advice but also for his skills as a general he was an indispensable bolt in the Oda war machine.

Apart from Tokugawa Ieyasu, Shibata Katsuie, Niwa Nagahide, Takigawa Kazumasu and Ikeda Nobuteru had equally good claims to take over from Nobunaga!
Warfare was the only likely result of all this, despite — or perhaps because of — Hideyoshi’s suggestion that Nobunaga’s one year old grandson should be the new clan leader.
