Mariner 9: Prelude to First Field Test of a General Theory of Biology?
By 1965, Mariner 4 imaging (7) indicated a moon-like cratered surface for Mars which strongly implied that the planet was lifeless.
Other Martian features without lunar analogs are the immense shield volcanoes, Nix Olympica and North, Middle and South Spots, as well as isolated volcanoes in other places (48).
The moon, Mars, and Earth, in that order, show increasing mass, density, internal energy and degree of geologic evolution (46): About half the surface of Mars consists of heavily cratered primitive terrain analogous to the lunar highlands. /mars/spie2/Reprint71.htm   (660 words)

Argon, an important ingredient of Mars' atmosphere, is also found in unexpectedly large amounts in the clouds of Venus and in the Moon's surface rocks [85].
The crater Nix Olympica is 300 miles wide and has a 100-mile-high peak.

DevASP Norton's Star Atlas and Reference Handbook, 20th Edition Book - 0131451642
As a matter of style I differ (perhaps) with another reviewer who would have liked to have seen color photographs--I guess I am nostalgic for the familiar "Norton's Green" and appreciate that editor Ridpath and designer Nix have continued the tradition in what is otherwise a major update of the classic.
The new higher contrast moon maps are a major improvement over the washed-out maps in some previous editions.
The heart of the atlas are the 16 starcharts, presented in the two-disk/six gore format familiar to lovers of the previous editions of the Norton's. /store/shop62/pd0131451642/Books_and_Software   (568 words)
