  Nixie & Dekatron Clocks
Nixie tubes (see above) were a common form of numeric display for electronic equipment from the mid-1950's thru the early 1970's, when they were supplanted by 7-segment LED displays.
The only real flaw in a Nixie display is due to the fact that the digits are stacked in front of each other, and therefore all but the frontmost digit will exhibit tiny gaps where they are shadowed by the digits in front of it.
I still haven't decided whether to use these for Nixie Clocks, placing the tubes where the meter currently is, or to use the meter as-is for an analog display similar to the WPS Model 13 Clock.

Nixie tubes were a common form of numeric display for electronic equipment from the mid-1950's thru the early 1970's, when they were supplanted by 7-segment LED displays.
The basic principles behind Nixie tubes live on in applications both low tech (neon light bulbs, as are used in nightlights) and high tech (plasma display panels), but Nixies themselves have long been considered obsolete.
The only real flaw in a Nixie display is due to the fact that the digits are stacked in front of each other, and therefore all but the frontmost digit will exhibit tiny gaps where they are shadowed by the digits in front of it.

Unlike to "normal" Nixies which have a pinout of 1 anode + 10 cathodes these have a pinout of 2 anodes + 5 dual-cathodes.
On normal Nixies the single anode is tied to a sufficiently high voltage across a current limiting anode resistor and there is only one active cathode at one time (plus probably a decimal point).
The following table shows the influence on a ZM1180 Nixie when cathode resistors are used to pull down the inactive cathodes closer to GND to reduce the idle voltages.

Nixie indicator tubes are character displays based upon vacuum tube technology.
Nixies are quite readable; they produce a nice non-flickering orange or red/orange light, reasonably visible in daylight, and they last a reasonably long time (5000 hours typical).
As mentioned above, the synergy with the Nixie indicator is that the counting tube electrodes directly drive the digit-cathodes of the Nixie tubes, "effectively replacing 18 transistors (10 high voltage ones) and forty diodes", according to Burroughs Catalog 918A, presumably a good thing in 1958.

 Nixie HV Switching PSU
This particular project sprang from my fondness for nixies, a type of cold-cathode discharge display tube popular in the 1960's and 1970's, before they were effectively killed off by LEDs.
Nixies require a 170V to 250V DC power supply at between 10mA and 50mA - each tube actually only takes part of that, but certain types of tube take more than others, and, whatever people say, size matters - the bigger the tube, generally the more current it takes.
Also, nixies tend to be used in multiples of two, normally these days for clocks.

Since neon requires a high voltage to operate and the Nixie tube was inherently fragile, most designers discontinued using these readouts by the early 1970's and began designing with the lesser evasive LED, LCD and VF displays.
Most Nixie projects are best built with smaller displays because they are easier to work with but you can choose a larger display if you like.

AN/SLQ-25 NIXIE   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The Torpedo Countermeasures Transmitting Set AN/SLQ-25A, commonly referred to as Nixie, is a passive, electro-acoustic decoy system used to provide deceptive countermeasures against acoustic homing torpedoes.
Modern acoustic towed decoys, such as the AN/SLQ-25 NIXIE and the older T-MK6 FANFAIR, employ electronic or electromechanical means to produce the required signals.
The system provides an alternate target diversion for an enemy acoustic homing torpedo by stringing on cable a "noise maker", aft of the ship, which has the capability of producing a greater noise than the ship; thereby diverting the incoming torpedo from the ship to the "fish".
