Nixie Clock by Nixieclock Net - Home of the Nixie tube clock -
Nixie tubes were originally developed in 1952 by the Haydu brothers for the Burroughs Corporation as the precursor to the computer monitor.
Nixie clocks have become very popular as a way to bring these devices 'out of the dark'.
The tube is filled with the inert gas neon (and other gases) with a small amount of mercury.

 Digital Nixie Tube Display Clock
A nixie tube is a pre-LED electronic device for displaying numbers or other information, in the form of a glass tube containing multiple cathodes and a wire mesh anode, filled with neon and often a little mercury and/or argon at a small fraction of atmospheric pressure.
It resembles a vacuum tube in appearance, like those used in early televisions and radios, however, its operation does not depend on heating of a cathode to cause it to emit electrons, as in the thermionic effect.
The most common form of nixie tube has ten cathodes in the shapes of the numerals 0 to 9 (and occasionally a decimal point or colon), but there are also types that show various letters, signs and symbols.

 Nixie & Dekatron Clocks
Nixie tubes (see above) were a common form of numeric display for electronic equipment from the mid-1950's thru the early 1970's, when they were supplanted by 7-segment LED displays.
The tube sockets are mounted on a metal plate separating the two cabinets, and the tubes extend for the full depth of the front cabinet (which is otherwise mostly empty).
I still haven't decided whether to use these for Nixie Clocks, placing the tubes where the meter currently is, or to use the meter as-is for an analog display similar to the WPS Model 13 Clock.

There were many different types of these tubes: viewed from the side, viewed from the top, small ones, big ones, giant sized, types where a neon glows through a character-shaped mask and arrays of multiple nixies with multiplexed wires.
Nixies that use a "primer current" for faster ignition response have uneven anode and cathode currents.
Nixies that have a decimal point to the right of the number should use the one in the 1 / Hours digit (LSB), with a left-side decimal point you use the one in the 10 / Minutes digit (MSB).

Each tube include a plastic base, these bases are cupped on one side to mate with the bottom of the tube and flat on the other for secure mounting to a circuit board.
Tubes are wire ended and can be directly soldered onto a board.

The basic principles behind Nixie tubes live on in applications both low tech (neon light bulbs, as are used in nightlights) and high tech (plasma display panels), but Nixies themselves have long been considered obsolete- you can now build your own nixie clock with easy to build kits.

To avoid the need for unsightly buttons on the case (and the need to isolate the mains voltage from the user), reed switches are used for the time-setting function, these being operated by holding a magnet against the case, near the appropriate switch.
Some nixies have 13 pins - the extra electrode is a 'primer', used to maintain ionisation to avoid flicker on multiplexed displays.

 WPS:Projects:decimal tubes
Nixies are quite readable; they produce a nice non-flickering orange or red/orange light, reasonably visible in daylight, and they last a reasonably long time (5000 hours typical).
Decimal counting tubes were developed in the early 50's from known but previously-useless phenomena to perform functions that otherwise required a chassis full of tubes and discrete components.
As mentioned above, the synergy with the Nixie indicator is that the counting tube electrodes directly drive the digit-cathodes of the Nixie tubes, "effectively replacing 18 transistors (10 high voltage ones) and forty diodes", according to Burroughs Catalog 918A, presumably a good thing in 1958.

 My Nixie Tube Mini-Tester
Since you do test only one tube with only one active cathode at one time it would be sufficient to have one point in the circuit where a Multimeter in Milli-Amperes range could be attached to.
On normal Nixies the single anode is tied to a sufficiently high voltage across a current limiting anode resistor and there is only one active cathode at one time (plus probably a decimal point).
The following table shows the influence on a ZM1180 Nixie when cathode resistors are used to pull down the inactive cathodes closer to GND to reduce the idle voltages.
