The film is a non-chronological narrative and is typical of Oliver Stone's visual style and cinematic approach to history, using a variety of film stocks and video techniques to give a sense of time, place, psychology and mood.
Both Hopkins and Stone decided to eschew the use of prosthetic makeup in creating the iconographic figure of Richard Nixon (test makeup for Nixon actually appears in some quickly edited clips during the film, and looks almost odd in comparison).

The Richard Nixon that I recall played his cards much closer to his vest (he was a terrific poker player, according to his naval buddies who lost a lot of their mustering out money to him aboard ship) and was not nearly as sympathetic as Hopkins and Stone make him.
Nixon was cold and unfeeling except when it came to something that touched on his self-interest, and then he became pathological.
A third great scene is late in the film as a drunken Pat Nixon confronts Nixon, who is falling apart under the pressure of the Watergate investigation, her eyes the eyes of woman looking at a worm, her manner accusatory and venomous.

Nixon is portrayed as actually trying to fight this, and my personal view is that Nixon's (and his adminstration's) actions were actually good: they make one realise how petty and insipid the game of politics is.
Nixon was no better or no worse than all the people before and after him who hold positions of power.
The fact that Nixon almost defeated Kennedy, and the fact that he was re-elected by the people speaks a lot of this than what we see in the movie.

Movie also suffers because of Stone's desire to make it look "cool" by combining different film stock, using MTV-style editing and putting Chinese and Cyrillic characters in the scenes that feature Nixon's meetings with leaders of China and Soviet Union.
At the very end of the film, when Hopkins' Nixon gets replaced with the documentary footage of 37th President, the audience would get impression that the real character was more intriguing and interesting than the one portrayed in the movie.

The Assassination of Richard Nixon is like a Rodney Dangerfield routine played straight, an orgy of masochism about a man who gets no respect.
The plot derives from the true story of Samuel Byck, a mentally disturbed Philadelphia man who blamed President Nixon for his personal troubles and, on Feb. 22, 1974, attempted to hijack a plane leaving Baltimore-Washington International Airport and crash it into the White House.
In Mueller and Kennedy’s version, Sam (Sean Penn) is a ferrety little man who works as an office furniture salesman, having been forced out of his brother’s tire dealership because, as he tells it, he insisted on being honest.
