		This project is a joint response to a request from Nkhotakota District Assembly (NDA) to address the inter-related environmental problems that have strongly affected the livelihoods, wellbeing and health of the communities in the Chia Lagoon Watershed.
		The aim of the project is to improve the livelihoods of rural communities within the Chia Lagoon Watershed through an integrated community-based approach that involves sustained economic use of the watershed’s natural resources of land, water, flora and fauna.

	TRADE-SOUTHERN AFRICA: Police Losing the Battle Against Marijuana
		Six drug traffickers were recently arrested at Nkhotakota, central Malawi, with 28 large bags of marijuana in a cemetery.
		Such arrests are unlikely to deter the other farmers in Nkhotakota from growing the herb, which is more lucrative than tobacco, Malawi's main cash crop.
		During their last raid in November last year, the police raided farms in the Nkhotakota and Mzimba districts in central and northern Malawi respectively, where they destroyed over 663,000 marijuana plants, worth over 61,000 kilogrammes.

		Police in Nkhotakota on Monday charged a man with an offence of attempted suicide for attempting to hang himself whilst in police custody.
		Nkhotakota Police spokesperson Laban Makalani confirmed the incident on Tuesday saying the suspect, Chimodzi Mkungula, 19, who hails from Malasa Village in Traditional Authority Malengachanzi’s area in Nkhotakota was arrested on Friday on allegations of malicious damage.
		Makalani said Mkungula wanted to commit suicide on Monday afternoon when his fellow inmates were on the veranda of the cell.
