The Nkwe ya Gauta (Golden Leopard) is South Africa's highest military decoration.
An arm-of-service emblem is worn on the ribbon to indicate whether the recipient was serving in the army, air force, navy, or military health service at the time of earning the decoration.
The NG forms part of a trio of military decorations for bravery, the others being the Nkwe ya Selefera (Silver Leopard) and the Nkwe ya Boronse (Bronze Leopard).

Decorations for bravery are Nkwe ya Gauta (NG), Nkwe ya Selefera (NS) and Nkwe ya Boronse (NB), which shall be awarded for bravery in military operations in the place of the Castle of Good Hope Decoration, the Honoris Crux (Silver) and the Honoris Crux.

SA National Defence Force: (1) Nkwe ya Gauta; (2) Nkwe ya Selefera; (3) Nkwe ya Boronse; (4) Okhankanyiweyo.
Instituted in 1975, it was awarded for operational and non-operational deeds until 1993, when it was restricted to military operations.
It was superseded by the Nkwe ya Selefera in 2003.

The first three were introduced in 1952 for the ribbons of the John Chard Decoration and John Chard Medal, to indicate the arm of service in which the recipient served.
Since 2003, these emblems have indicated that the decoration was earned during a military operation, and they are authorised for the ribbons of the Nkwe ya Gauta, Nkwe ya Selefera and Nkwe ya Boronse and for operational awards of iPhrothiya yeGolide, iPhrothiya yeSiliva, and iPhrothiya ye Bhronzi.
The decoration was superseded by the Nkwe ya Gauta in 2003.
