 NMI Simulation Resources (nmisim):
The NMI does not define a framework and it trys not to address framework issues, apart from defining three primary areas of interaction: the passing of data, the passing of control and timing information, and the passing of configuration information.
Further information regarding the interoperability of NMI components and supporting frameworks, their development and use, and all associated support file packages, is available in the Network Model Interface documentation.
The NMI is being used within a system encompassing the ventral pathway, pre-frontal areas, the frontal eye fields, the basal ganglia, the cerebellum and a model of the external world, applied to the block building task.

NMI stands for Normalized Mutual Information and is a performance metric for confusion matrices published by A. Forbes in 1995 in the Journal of Clinical Monitoring.
NMI attempts to determine how well one classification (assumed to be the columns of the confusion matrix) is able to predict the second classification.
Notice that the NMI scores are almost identical between the two confusion matrices, but the transposed scores are much different.

 The Perils of NMI
NMI is a critical resource, yet all too often it's misused.
I'm a firm believer in restricting NMI to those conditions that are truly unusual and of momentous importance.
If the NMI input signal is perfectly clean but moves slowly from the idle to the asserted state, it stays within the threshold region for far too long, sometimes causing multiple NMI triggers.

LWN: Patch: Patch to 2.6.8.1-mm2 to allow multiple NMI handlers to be registered
The attached patch modifies the NMI handling to do the following (for x86 only): * Allow multiple handlers to be registered and return if they have handled the NMI or not.
It is not perfect because the hardware around NMIs sucks so badly, but it does work ok. This code has been available as a patch as part of the IPMI driver for a while, so it has seen some testing.
The external NMIs + * are level-generated, into the processor NMIs are + * edge-triggered, so if you have one NMI source + * come in while another is already there, the level + * will never go down to cause another edge, and + * no more NMIs will happen.

NMI projects also are ongoing in the U.S. and Europe to build grid-like systems for biologists, who speak often of the ongoing vexations related to trying to share the huge amounts of data their research generates.
