No 13 Squadron was formed at Gosport on 10 January 1915, taking its BE2Cs across the Channel in October, initially employed on corps reconnaissance duties.
As the RAF withdrew from its Middle East bases in the late 1960s, No. 13 remained in Malta until transferring to Wyton in 1978, continuing to fly Canberras until disbanded in 1982.
No. 13 squadron reformed with the new Tornado GR1A at Honington on 1 January 1990, and moved to its current home, Marham, some four years later.

With the threat of war with Japan, 13 Squadron RAAF was split into two groups, one detached flight of 6 Lockheed Hudsons was based at Laha on Ambon, with another at Namlea.
13 Squadron was made non-operational in early 1943 to allow them to re-equip their aircraft.
It was finally presented to the reformed 13 Squadron RAAF Reserve in Darwin on 1 July 1989.

Squadron’s inventory was accompanied by two fatal accidents, and some other minor incidents, that did nothing to dispel the dislike the crews had developed for the aircraft.
It was unceremoniously transformed from a bombing squadron, to a transport one.
No convincing reason has been given for the transformation of the 13th Squadron, especially at a time when it had a lot to offer (in its original role and with suitable equipment).

On 1 December 1943, No 1623 Flight at Roborough was raised to squadron status as No 691.
No 1435 Flight was formed in Malta as a night fighter unit on 4 December 1941 but it disbanded in June 1942.

The Air Force Association Trophy was awarded to No. 13 Squadron in recognition of outstanding proficiency in satisfying prescribed objectives and meeting unforseen additional tasking in 1997.
The Air Commander Australia Commendation was awarded to No. 13 Squadron on 11 August 2000 for outstanding service to the Australian Defence Force and Royal Australian Air Force Bases Darwin and Tindal in support of Operations Warden and Tanager.

On the 24th of July 1940 No 19 Squadron moved from Duxford to the Fowlmere Satellite Station.

XIII or 13 Squadron of the Royal Air Force operates the Tornado GR4A from RAF Marham, Norfolk.
By the autumn of 1939 the Sqn was equipped with Lysanders and operated in France until May 1940 when No. XIII Sqn changed role and theatre, flying a variety of bomber aircraft in the Mediterranean until the end of the War.

This Squadron was part of the Home Defense Establishment and was responsible for the defense of the West Coast of Canada until it was disbanded on September 10, 1945.
The Squadron was established at Mossbank, Saskatchewan on June 15, 1942 and flew Hurricanes until May, 1944, when it was reequipped with the Kittyhawk Mk.
The interesting marking on this aircraft is the Hornet emblem of the Squadron painted on the center of the fuselage roundels; a small, but interesting touch.

The Association's main aim in life is to foster the comradeship amongst former and current members of the Squadron, a regular Reunion being the major contributor.
I have no desire to see the Association split into "eras", and if the 90th Anniversary Dinner was anything to go by then there is little chance of that happening.
I was the Executive Officer when the Squadron was reformed with Tornados at Honington in September '89 until September '92 after which I continued to be involved from HQ 1 Group for the next 4 years.

RAAF Station Darwin and 13 Squadron RAAF were formed from 12 Squadron on 1 June 1940.
On 5 February 1946, the advance party of 12 Squadron, Commanded by Squadron Leader J.E.S. Bennet arrived at Amberley Base and became a lodger unit on No 3 Aircraft Depot.
The movement of 12 Squadron was completed during March 1946 and the Squadron was reduced to a care and maintenance unit at Amberley, and eventually came under the command of the Headquarters No 82 Wing.

 The fall of Ambon
The third flight of No.13 RAAF Squadron landed at Namlea airfield on Buru Island, near Ambon at the end of December, then went to Babo, Dutch New Guinea.
The principal fortifications were at Paso, also adjacent to the town of Ambon on the Laitimor Peninsula at Bennet was a battery of guns operated by Dutch permanent artillerymen and was emplaced in concrete with accommodation, underground telephone system and covered the Bay of Ambon and Laha airfield.
On 13 January 1942 both Brewster Buffalos piloted by Lt. Broers and Sgt. Blans attacked a flight of 10 Japanese Navy Zeros.

The Squadron was formed at South Farnborough on I March, 1915, drawing on personnel from No. 1 Reserve Squadron and the Recruits Depot.
In the battle of Arras in 1917 the Squadron was heavily involved but in May, 1917 No. 15 re-equipped with R. 8s and after a period with the General Reserve joined IV Corps.
Thereafter No. 15 has served continuously in the bomber role, at first as a light bomber squadron with Harts, Hinds, Battles and Blenheims, then as a night bomber squadron with 3 Group and in from 1940 onwards with Welfingtons, Stirlings and Lancaster's.
