No 608 Squadron was formed on 17 March 1930 at Thornaby as a day bomber unit of the Auxiliary Air Force.
By the end of 1942, the squadron was flying anti-submarine patrols over the Western Mediterranean from Algeria, a move being made to Sicily in September for a month, before moving on to Italy where the squadron disbanded on 31 July 1944.
On 24 August 1945, the squadron was disbanded.

 The History of Thornaby Aerodrome
The Auxiliary airforce 608 Bomber squadron was formed at Thornaby on 17 March 1930, consisting of one officer and 11 airmen.
Squadron Leader G H Ambler took command of 608 squadron on 30 December 1934.
608 Squadron`s annual camp took place at Warmwell but was cut short by the impending war and the squadron received signal giving one hour`s notice to return to Thornaby at 1600hrs on the 23rd August.

RAF Extra Dark Sea Gray was originally supposed to supersede both AAF Neutral Gray and USN Blue Gray as Sea Grey 603, the Extra Dark prefix being dropped.
RAF Insignia Red was much less intense, and was of a much darker hue.
The fact this point is moot stems from the fact that in the same month the RAF color was accepted by the USAAF, all red was eliminated from the insignia of all U.S. aircraft.

 Avro Anson
The first war time operation flights of 608 squadron from Thornaby was on the 21st September 1939 by Anson serial no. N5207 flown by squadron leader G Shaw with f/o Woolcock, W Op LAC Kelly and Cpl Knott as crew, on an anti- submarine patrol, in response to a false alarm.
Pilots of 224 and 608 squadrons were sometimes used to ferry pilots from Catterick to collect Spitfires from Shawbury or to collect Ansons from Cosford and Hudsons from Shawbury.
The real tasks of 608 squadron were to locate surface mines which were subsequently destroyed by mine sweepers of the Royal Navy, the siting of U-boats or ships suspected of aiding the enemy and looking for small boats carrying refugees and escapees in addition to guarding the North Sea convoys.

By September 19th 1939, the squadron was available for anti-submarine patrol from 0600 hours to 1600 hours with four Anson’s on standby, but the first operational flight of 608 Squadron was not made until the 21st.
Thus, it was the role of Anson M {R3316} of 608 Squadron that escorted the Torpedoed Destroyer H.M.S. Kelly, Captained by L. Mountbatten, back into the Tyne after it had fought off the German E boats in an encounter of Heligoland, causing her 27 fatal casualties.
Yet the North Riding Squadron which led the movement for auxiliary units to retain their identity and which two years later still possessed 70 percent of its personnel, flight and ground staff, natives of the Riding whose name it was associated with.

With no ops scheduled, training flights were laid on, and each crew's training flight log was as closely scrutinized as were the ops ones.
With 608 Squadron of Mosquitoes of Light Night Striking Force on the same field, and many times operating jointly with 635 as markers on the same targets, there was always a friendly feeling of competitiveness between them.
When going to the same target, 608, in their much faster Mosquitoes, would take off long after 635 had disappeared, would be over the target finishing their marking as the 635 primary markers were arriving, and be back to Downham, debriefed and in bed or the bar while 635 were still struggling home.

In November 1941, the squadron flew off the carrier HMS Argus to Malta, where it was retained as part of the island's defences, prior to continuing its journey to the Far East.
A new No 605 was formed at Ford on 7 June 1942, equipped with Bostons in the intruder role.
It became one of the few squadrons to fly the Blackburn Botha which it flew alongside Anson from October 1939 to November 1940, when the type was relegated to a training role.

The squadrons heavy operational commitments were not in any way disrupted by its transfer to Binbrook on the 14th May, 1943, the aircrews and ground staff flying over in Lancasters, whilst the main body were transported in Horsa gliders.
Squadron Leader Jack Clark DFC., who had assumed command of the squadron, was shot down on 12 December in an attack on Essen and this popular officer, who had done his first tour on 460, was greatly missed.
The squadron's Bomber Command record for the number of sorties flown in the last winter of the war, broke its its previous record and on 7 March, 1945, in the attack on Dessau, it became the first to complete 5000 sorties in Lancasters.

No citation other than "completed...numerous operations against the enemy in the course of which [he has] invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty".
On his last operational sortie he and his pilot were forced to ditch in enemy waters and although landing in enemy territory, after three days in a dinghy, through help by Italians and their own initiative, they regained friendly territory by rowing to Corsica from Elba.
Nevertheless, Squadron Leader Hemphill flew to an emergency field in England where he executed a masterly landing.

My father was one of those RAF technician who were attached to Number 815 Squadron of the Fleet Air Arm and served on board H.M.S. Kent, a County Class cruiser, before the war on its tour to the Far East.
608 Squadron was a Coastal Command SQ, a Lockheed Hudson spotted the Altmark [supply ship for sea raiders ] in a Norwegian fiord and this resulted in the release of a good number of Allied Merchant Seamen being taken to a German P O W camp.

First used in 1942, together with the Handley-Page Halifax it was the main heavy bomber of the RAF, the Royal Canadian Air Force, and squadrons from other Commonwealth and European countries serving with RAF Bomber Command.

Number 151 Squadron may have scored the Mosquito's first "kill" in the dark hours of the morning on 30 May 1942, claiming a Heinkel He-111 on the night of 29 May. Number 157 Squadron competitively claimed damage to a Dornier Do-217 the next night.
It was by no means a beast, it just provided a lot of performance and the pilot had to be aware of what he had his hands on.
A special squadron, RAF Number 618, was formed to use the weapon, but various problems kept the Highball out of service until May 1944, by which time it was not regarded as particularly needed in Europe.

The squadron shortly thereafter received orders from higher headquarters that all combat crews and airplanes were to be transferred to other bomb groups in the ETO.

Early versions of the B-24 were heavily armed by pre-war standards, the B-24A having two.30 caliber machine guns in the tail and six.50 caliber weapons (one in the nose, one in a ventral position, two in an upper turret, and one on each side at the waist positions).
Early in the war, both the RAF and the USAAF found this armament inadequate, and additional machine guns were added in subsequent versions.
Some of No. 311 Squadron's Liberators were equipped with four 5-inch rockets on airfoil-shaped mounts forward of the bomb bays, and such rockets were used in sinking one U-boat.

 Lets Buy Turkish F-4 Phatoms - Pakistani Defence Forum
As you people all know the turkish airforce is wanting to sell its phantoms even though it just had them upgraded by IAI israeli aircraft industries, there now more interested in the JSF.
They are selling at $ 17 000 000 (us), thus if pakistan buys even 1 squadron it will be a very cheap option considering the ammount of technology you would be getting beacuse they have been updated.
I believe the remainder of the non upgraded F-4Es are probably being floated around (some of them, perhaps the older air frames), but no way will the Turks sell their recently upgrade Phantoms.
