 Fleet Air Arm 838 squadron profile. Squadron Database of the Fleet Air Arm Archive 1939-1945
The squadron flew to USNAS Alameda Island, USA in August 1942, embarking on HMS Attacker in December 1942 for the Panama Canal, returning to Quonset Point, and subsequently re-embarking for convoy duties to Curacao.
In April 1943, at Machrihanish the squadron was allocated for MAC-ship service, after training on HMS Argus and HMS Activity, and embarked for trials on the MAC-ship Rapana in August 1943, after which the squadron was merged into 836 squadron as L Flight.
In April 1944 the squadron joined 156 Wing RAF Coastal Command at Harrowbeer for operations in the English Channel, subsequently joining RAF coastal Command in Fraserburgh in October 1944.

 The Grumman F4F Wildcat
The FAA had originally expected to obtain their G-36Bs with fixed wings, but Grumman was working on a wing-folding scheme at the time, which would allow a carrier to handle a substantially larger complement of aircraft.
The FAA obtained 220 "Martlet IVs" that were based on the F4F-4 but had substantial differences, most particularly the fit of a Wright R-1820-40B Cyclone in a distinctly more rounded and compact cowling with a single double-wide flap on each side of the rear and no lip intake.
The FAA took the Martlet on a combat carrier cruise for the first time in July 1941 on the HMS AUDACITY, to be followed by deployment on the HMS ARGUS in August 1941.

The aircraft was built around a central cabin for the Observer (a concept which seems to have been first tried in the Blackburn Blackburn and Avro Bison of the 1920's, but seemed to be unique to the FAA) which dictated the rather strange appearance of the aircraft.
Designed to replace the Swordfish and Albacore, the first Barracuda Prototype flew in 1940, but the aircraft (in its Mark II Version) did not enter Squadron service until 1943, and first flew operationally with 810 Squadron covering the landings at Salerno.
The Mark II was the principal production mark, and equipped the bulk of FAA TSR squadrons throughout the remainder of the war.
