Nice Guy is the debut album by alternative hip hop artist Gang Starr, released in 1989 (see 1989 in music).
The album was a critical success upon its first release, when it came amid the first wave of alternative hip hop acts like De La Soul, though No More Mr.
Nice Guy remains somewhat overshadowed by massively influentiall albums like 3 Feet High and Rising.

Though some claim the proto-hip hop, jazzy poet Gil Scott-Heron the beginning of jazz rap, the genre arose in 1988 with the release of the debut singles by Gang Starr ("Words I Manifest", which samples Charlie Parker) and Stetsasonic ("Talkin' All That Jazz", which samples Sonny Liston-Smith[?]).
Nice Guy and their work on the soundtrack to Mo' Better Blues[?], and De La Soul's debut 3 Feet High and Rising have proven remarkably influential in the genre's development.
A Tribe Called Quest's follow-up, The Low End Theory (1991, 1991 in music), included only a small amount of jazz, but the album was a critical success and is regarded as one of the most influential hip hop albums of the decade.

Besides helming tracks for his main concern, Gang Starr, since their 1989 debut, Premier's productions appeared on many of the East Coast's most important records: Nas' Illmatic, the Notorious B.I.G. 's Ready to Die, Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt, Jeru the Damaja's The Sun Rises in the East, and Mos Def's Black on Both Sides.
Gang Starr's interest in melding hip-hop with jazz informed the record, and they were invited to add to the soundtrack for Spike Lee's 1990 film Mo' Better Blues.
Their subsequent work was much more mature and unified, with a pair of instant East Coast classics (1991's Step in the Arena and 1992's Daily Operation) arriving in short order.

A somewhat bitter-sounding album, MC Guru's sternly low-key delivery and DJ Premier's signature, sparse beats (see the 2006 Christina Aquilera single "Ain't No Other Man") are once again beautifully complimentary of one another, but the overall tone of the record is one of being burnt out.
Gang Starr's tough tales of the streets are much more thought out than your G-Unit's of today, inspiring people to think ahead to the consequences of their actions before they act hard for little reward.
This sense of empowerment resonates through all of Gang Starr's albums, but is worth mentioning for those who may not be as familiar.

Nice Guy, their debut, is ironically the closest Gang Starr ever came to perfecting their style.
This is a demonstration Gang Starr finding their sound and formulating their well respected chemistry.
Of course this album does not go as far into the gay realm as Kid & Play and the other before mentioneds, but it still is no wear as cool as all there other later releases which are pretty much flawless.
