Carly Simon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Carly Elisabeth Simon (born June 25, 1945 in New York City) is an American musician who emerged as one of the leading lights of the early 1970s singer-songwriter boom.
Carly was raised in the Riverdale neighborhood of New York City and has two older sisters, Joanna and Lucy, and a younger brother, Peter.
Carly Simon currently lives on Martha's Vineyard and co-owns a store in Vineyard Haven named Midnight Farm, which is also the title of one of the series of children's books she wrote in the 1990s.

Carly Simon's third album, 1972's NO SECRETS, was her best-selling release ever, thanks to the inclusion of the huge hit single "You're So Vain".
Carly Simon has that ability to dig into the psychological depths with a combination of subtle lyricism and crafty tunes.
Carly Simon has not done much since, apart from marrying James Taylor to become one half of the world's top-earning couple in the Seventies, and she was not quite the artist starving in a garret before that.

DVD-A REVIEW: Carly Simon: No Secrets
SOUND: "No Secrets" is presented by Rhino/Warner in 24bit/96khz DVD-Audio 5.1, DVD-Audio 2.0 and DVD-Video compatible Dolby Digital 5.1.
"No Secrets" is a very pleasant repurposing of this 1972 album, with an enjoyable remix of the original elements, which sound better here than I would have expected from a recording of the era.
Simon's vocals are clearly and crisply heard from the center channel, while the drums on "You're So Vain" pounded with respectable authority and force.

DVD-Audio Review: Carly Simon - ‘No Secrets’
Simon was once quoted as saying “…there’s nothing there that isn’t true of Warren Beatty”, but whether or not he was the original target of derision is open to question.
Simon was twenty-seven when recording began and had already reached maturity as a performer, evident by the wide pitch range covered from song to song.
There are times when Simon’s lead vocal recedes somewhat, but on the whole her mellow, warm delivery is conveyed in a rounded, convincing way, free from any undue sibilance emphasis or the ‘fizzing’ heard on certain SACD discs.

 Carly Simon
There's nothing cool about being a Carly Simon fan: her records are unabashed pop; her image is clean-cut but not campily so; she wasn't the first or the best-selling or the weirdest or the anything-est of the singer-songwriters.
Simon became an instant success with the single "That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" (written with Jacob Brackman), a remarkably mature look at marriage that now sounds dated after the post-60s tide of high divorce rates and unmarried couples.
Also, Simon didn't have enough of her own material to fill an album, and the outsider contributions include spectacular failures like Mark Klingman's "Just A Sinner," though Kramer cronie Buzzy Linhart's peace and love anthem "The Love's Still Growing" is surprisingly credible.

Carly Simon's debut, in my opinon, lacks the polish (and the hit singles) of her later albums, but that doesn't make it anything less in the quality department.
Carly Simon's debut album, despite not being as popular as her later work, is really nothing less in the quality department.
Carly Simon's self-titled 1971 debut album starts off with her first hit, the haunting "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be," which has the effect of making the rest of the album look weak in comparison.

Carly Simon was one of the most popular of the confessional singer/songwriters who emerged in the early '70s.
The youngest child in an upper-class New York family (her father, Richard Simon, co-founded the Simon and Schuster publishing company), Simon got her start in music as part of a duo with her sister Lucy (who later wrote the music for the Broadway show {+The Secret Garden).
Simon's second album, Anticipation (November 1971) (which went gold in two years), contained a Top 40 follow-up in the title song, and she won the 1971 Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

Carly Simon has been around since the late 1960s, and is not only an exceptionally fine singer, but a fine songwriter to boot, with over 20 albums, and dozens of other songs written by her but performed by other artists, as a testament.
No Secrets is a fairly simple mixture of ballads and pop tunes with excellent lyrics, coming as they do from within Simon's own life experiences.
Stridency was the order of the day and listening to any of the even mildly upbeat songs is a challenge since the sound tended to distort at any decent level of listening and become unbearable fairly quickly.

For instance, “Carly Simon”, used either as a noun or an adjective, between the two of us and to a lesser degree amongst our friends, has come to signify a condition in which the nipples are visibly erect, especially as observed through an article of clothing.
The album would have been fun if it had just been full of such knowing, wink-wink-nudge-nudging, but Simon wisely tempers her songs with a sense of reflection, often exposing vulnerabilities and weaknesses.
The title track starts off almost as a boast to friends about the strength of a relationship, “We have no secrets”, but by the time she gets to the chorus, she’s admitting, “Sometimes I wish, Often I wish that I never knew… some of those secrets of yours”.

One of music’s most influential and cherished singer/songwriters, Carly Simon has recorded and released over 25 albums and is internationally renowned as a versatile artist who is consistently breaking new ground.
This CD is amazing - because of the longevity of my "relationship" with Carly's artistry, I have her earlier works in old, well worn vinyl albums and hearing these remastered versions of her earliest songs just makes my heart (and voice, joining her buttery smooth tones) sing.
This compilation of Carly Simon is quite good, my only complaint would be that the whole compilation should have focused on her 70's-80's work and could have left the 90's and beyond, out.

But Simon's honesty meant that her lyrical knife was double-edged; now that she felt she had found true love ("The Right Thing to Do," another Top Ten hit, was her celebration of her relationship with James Taylor), she was as willing to acknowledge her own mistakes and regrets as she was to point fingers.
But it wasn't only Simon's forthrightness that made the album work; it was also Richard Perry's simple, elegant pop/rock production, which gave Simon's music a buoyancy it previously lacked.
And Perry paid particular attention to Simon's vocals in a way that made her more engaging (or at least less grating) to listen to.
