 ALFVÉN WAVE : Encyclopedia Entry
An Alfvén wave in a plasma is a traveling oscillation of the ions and the magnetic field.
The wave propagates in the direction of the magnetic field, although waves exist at oblique incidence and smoothly change into the magnetosonic wave when the propagation is perpendicular to the magnetic field.
The motion of the ions and the perturbation of the magnetic field are in the same direction and transverse to the direction of propagation.

density wave - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about density wave
In astrophysics, concept proposed to account for the existence of spiral arms in galaxies.
In the density wave theory, stars in a spiral galaxy move in elliptical orbits in such a way that they crowd together in waves of temporarily enhanced density that appear as spiral arms.
The idea was first proposed by Swedish astronomer Bertil Lindblad in the 1920s and developed by US astronomers Chia Lin and Frank Shu in the 1960s.
