No Wave - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
No Wave was a short-lived but influential offshoot of punk rock centered in New York City during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The term No Wave was partly a satiric wordplay rejecting the commercial elements of the then-popular New Wave genre, and also a declaration of the music's experimental nature: No Wave music belonged to no fixed style or genre.
No Wave filmmakers included Amos Poe, John Lurie, Scott B and Beth B, and led to the Cinema of Transgression and work by Nick Zedd and Richard Kern.

Now, it could be argued that the no wave has no core politic or shared aesthetic and so does not constitute a 'sector' or a 'project' but such an argument would betray a basic misunderstanding of the nature and history of independent film and video.
The LFMC originally subscribed to the term 'Underground Film' and initially functioned as a cinema which screened imported American work, as their membership expanded and they began to produce their own work the term Underground was dropped and replaced by 'avant-garde'.
The no wave cinema scene is part of this culture and also a direct descendent of the first wave of underground filmmakers.

Steve Nottingham: The French New Wave
During the late 1950s and early 1960s young film-makers in many countries were creating their own "new waves", for example the working-class cinema of the "angry young men" in Britain, but the new wave movement in France turned out to be the most influential.
The core group of French New Wave directors initially collaborated and assisted each other, which helped in the development of a common and distinct use of form, style and narrative, which was to make their work instantly recognizable.
The characters in French New Wave films are often marginalized, young anti-heroes and loners, with no family ties, who behave spontaneously, often act immorally and are frequently seen as anti-authoritarian.

UW Press - : A History of the French New Wave Cinema, Richard Neupert
One important, permeating critical opinion that helped motivate the rise of an alternative, New Wave cinema in the 1950s was the broadly accepted notion that postWorld War II French cinema was in a stagnant condition and needed a dramatic overhaul.
Throughout the world, cinema was seen as an important cultural barometer, and it was not lost on the French that, while Japan and Italy were earning greater respect each year, France was floundering.
Understanding this general sentiment of a French cinema that had lost its cultural significance and artistic edge helps one appreciate that the arrival of what would be announced as a "wave" of new young directors really was an exciting change and even a victory for journalists and film buffs.

No Wave Cinema was a nearly nine year boom (1976-1985) in underground filmmaking on the Lower East Side neighborhood of New York City.
Its name, much like its cousin No Wave music, was a stripped down style of guerilla/punk filmmaking that emphasized mood and texture above everything else.
The filmmakers mainly associated with the movement included Amos Poe, Eric Mitchell, Beth B and Scott B, Vivienne Dick, John Lurie, Becky Johnston, and James Nares.

The Walker's "Japanese New Wave Cinema" is something of a mislabeled package, gathering movies from 1960s Japan that don't feature strutting samurai or an animated Atomic Boy (and which are extremely rare in these parts).
It should be noted that "New Wave" is itself a loose handle: First applied to the style-breaking works of Truffaut, Godard, Varda, Rohmer, et al., it later denoted movies (and movements) in Sweden, Hungary, Cuba, Poland, the U.S., and elsewhere.
