No 46 Squadron was formed at Wyton on 19 April 1916 from a nucleus trained in No 2 Reserve Squadron and, after a brief period of training, went to France in October 1916 equipped with Nieuport 2-seaters.
In November 1917, the Squadron was re-equipped with Sopwith Camels and gave valuable assistance to the infantry in the Cambrai attack.
No 46 Squadron assembled at Bardufoss and began operation on 26 May; patrols were maintained over the land and naval forces at Narvik without respite, some of the pilots going without sleep for more than 2 days.

After the war, the Squadron moved to Germany briefly, returning to the UK in August 1919 prior to disbandment at the end of the year.
By September 1939, the Squadron was flying Hurricanes, and during the Battle of Britain formed part of No 11 Group until, after two months in the frontline, it was moved north to regroup.
In February 1949, Meteor-equipped No 266 Squadron at Tangmere was renumbered No 43.

At the conclusion of hostilities, the squadron was disbanded.
The squadron was re-formed at Tanjor, converting to Wellington VIIIs in December, 1942.

The Sqn returned to RAF Akrotiri toward the end of the year and was given notice of its return to the UK having completed 15 years uninterrupted service in the Middle East.
After successful conversion, the Sqn took up residence at RAF Leuchars as part of No 11 Gp and in Aug 1977 Her Majesty the Queen approved the award of a Standard to 27 Sqn RAF Regt for 25 years service.
No 27 Sqn is now responsible for the manning and management of the Biological Detection Capability within the Jt NBC Regt.

Luckily, after the RAF had originally given it to the Royal Indian Air Force in 1948, it had been used and flown on coastal command operations by the now I.A.F. either to watch for Pakistanis or to chase gold-smuggling dhows sailing down from the Persian Gulf.
The new RAF roundels were still a little tacky and the "from I.A.F. to R.A.F. museum" plague was firmly riveted on.
No ceremony would have been complete without the coconut and the flowers, and this was duly done.

"Johnnie" Johnson joined No.19 Squadron RAF at the end of August 1940, he arrived with a unit that had no time to train new pilots and he was therefore soon moved to No.616 Squadron.
Johnnie returned to England in 1952 to commander RAF Wildenrath, he was promoted group Captain in 1954 and served at the MOD until 1957.
Johnnie Jonhson retired from the RAF in March 1966, becoming Chief Executive of a housing trust, deputy Lord Lieutenant of Leicstershire, as well as a director of various companies and a prolific author.

This exciting history of the RAF Bristol Beaufighter squadrons, particularly 177, in the Air War in Burma is being published in Canada after running out of print in Britain.
The three squadrons of twin-engined, long range, ground attack fighters were part of the Third Tactical Air Force in Burma but their role was as much strategic as they carried their attacks against trains.
Atholl Sutherland Brown was a pilot in Burma with 177 Squadron RAF in 1944-45 and was awarded the DFC in 1945.

By the time of the German invasion of France in May 1940 19 RAF squadrons were operating the Spitfire.
