It includes Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service squadrons incorporated into the RAF when it was formed in 1918, during World War I.
However, the list excludes squadrons which were later transferred to the Army Air Corps or the Fleet Air Arm.
Squadrons with Roman numerals instead of Arabic numerals are identified in that fashion traditionally.

No 6 Squadron operates in the fighter-bomber role equipped with Jaguar GR3A strike aircraft, and Jaguar T4 two-seat advanced training and conversion aircraft, whilst No 41 Squadron with Jaguar GR3s and T4s specializing in the photographic reconnaissance role.
RAF Lossiemouth was built during 1938 and 1939 and opened on Ma 1, 1939 with No 15 Flying Training School as the major unit.

The Squadron embarked for the UK at the end of December and arrived at Stoney Cross at the beginning of January 1945 and began operation under Transport Command.
From July 1948, the Squadron was almost exclusively engaged on the Berlin Airlift; to begin with, it operated from Wunsdorf carrying food and later from Fassberg and Lubekc carrying coal.
By March 1955 when Wing Commander Birchfield took over as CO from Squadron Leader Ross, the manpower situation was improving, but MT shortages caused problems for the Squadron, whose dispersal was on the opposite side of the airfield to the rest of the station.

A number of Squadrons were kept overseas- No. 14 Squadron with its Corsair aircraft was sent as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces to Japan in 1946, where it remained for two-and-a-half years.
No. 14 Squadron's next overseas tour began in 1952 when, equipped with Vampire jets hired from the RAF, it was sent to Cyprus to operate with the RAF's Middle East Air Force.
The Squadron was replaced by the RNZAF Support Unit Singapore (RNZAF SUS), and equipped with the remaining No. 41 Squadron Iroquols.

Squadron aircraft were used for bombing and reconnaissance missions in support of British, Canadian and ANZAC forces and by the end of hostilities the unit was regarded as the best allied reconnaissance squadron of the war.
No 4 Squadron ended the War in Borneo and returned to Australia in November 1945, where it was renamed 3 Squadron - thus closing the chapter on a very distinguished and proud unit.
No 5 Squadron formed in England in September 1917 and although the Squadron did not see any action during the war it provided vital training for fighter pilots prior to their postings to operational squadrons.

Number 42 Squadron formed at Filton on 1 April 1916 from a nucleus provided by No 19 Squadron, moving to France in August with BE2s for reconnaissance duties over the Western Front.
In April 1917, the Squadron re-equipped with RE8s and moved to northern Italy to cover the Austro-Italian Front, returning to France in March 1918.In February 1919, the unit returned to the UK and disbanded at Netheravon on 26 June.
No 42 Squadron's current commission started on 28 June 1952 when it reformed at St Eval in Cornwall equipped with Shackletons for maritime reconnaissance duties.

To No.42 Squadron in July 1945 and used as a reserve aircraft for firewatch duties based at Rotorua.
The aircraft was part of a formation flight giving a display when for no apparent reason it dropped astern and lost altitude, before entering a steep dive and crashing onto the airport.
Sold to Tauranga Aero Club from No.42 Squadron on 25 June 1946 and entered the New Zealand Civil Aircraft Register as ZK-AJU in June 1946 with TTA of 2126:15.

During the hectic struggle against the invading Japanese in Malaya and Singapore in 1941-42, the RNZAF was represented by No.488 Squadron RAF and the RNZAF's Aerodrome Construction Unit in Malaya and Singapore, and later in Java.
The first RNZAF squadron to engage the Japanese in direct combat was No.3 Squadron [Hudsons], which moved to Henderson Field at Guadalcanal in November 1942.
In 1964, No.14 Squadron flying New Zealand owned Canberras was on a regular exercise to Singapore, when it was directed to remain in theatre as part of the British Commonwealth build-up of forces to counter Indonesian insurgency into Borneo.

There was no need for this attack on the Vengances as all allied aircraft had broad white bands on the wings besides the Vengances were basically US aircraft.
He also commanded No.7 Squadron and in 1961 was involved in Operations against the Portugese in the Liberation of Diu.

Flak was a constant companion and the planes were often riddled with holes.
A squadron of German ME-109s was spotted to the east, but they kept their distance.
Sunshine was repaired by the Germans and flown by the Luftwaffe in intruder missions against the RAF.

I served in the RAF on 201 Squadron MR3 Avro Shackleton aircraft from May 1960 to October 1963 which was then based at St. Mawgan, less than a handful of miles from the resort of Newquay and lying on a very picturesque and rugged North Cornish coastline.
A detachment of 22 Squadron Westland Whirlwind helicopters from RAF Chivenor were ever present but based on the St. Mawgan village side of the airfield.
At RAF St Mawgan in 1962 we had just seen a Mark 3 Shackleton in from 201 Squadron that had been on one of those long 12 hour maritime patrols and during the flight the reduction gear on number 3 engine to the propeller failed.

Lt., No. 133 Eagle Squadron, RAF, KIA - Executed by the Germans for his part in the Great Escape of 76 POWs from Stalag Luft III.
His last message was, "What will I do, I have an FW-190 on my tail." His aircraft was seen to take no evasive action, roll on its side and go straight in smoking.
He was last seen at this position just as enemy aircraft engaged the squadron.
