It was the first squadron to exploit the unique overwing fuel tank fitted to the Lightning - if you ever see a fuel gauge at an aerojumble which reads O/WING, you know it’s from a Lightning, because no other aircraft before or since has ever carried overwing fuel tanks.
At the end of 1980, the Binbrook squadrons adopted a double tail code, the first letter indicating the squadron; ‘A’ to 5 Squadron, ‘B’ to 11 Squadron and ‘D’ to the Lightning Training Flight.

The RAF Station Commander caught on, and announced a general amnesty if all the stolen radios were returned and placed "outside my office by tomorrow morning." Whatever the alternative it can't have been pleasant; Digby recalls that most of the radios were in fact returned by the deadline.
