No 7 was the first squadron to received the first of the RAF's four-engined heavy bombers, the Stirling in 1940, but serious problems meant that operational sorties could not be carried out until the night of 10/11 February 1941 when the squadron attacked oil storage tanks at Rotterdam.
In 1943, No 7 was one of the initial squadrons which formed the Pathfinder Force and converted to Lancasters.

The strengthening of the RAF squadrons based in Malaya, and the formation of new ones, was helped in 1940 and 1941 by the sending of a monthly quota of pilots trained in New Zealand under the Commonwealth Air Training Plan, and New Zealand representation in many of the squadrons reached a very high proportion.
On Singapore Island there were two squadrons of Vildebeeste torpedo-bombers with twenty-seven serviceable aircraft, one general reconnaissance squadron with three Catalina aircraft, one general reconnaissance squadron with eight Hudsons, four fighter squadrons with a total of forty-three Buffalos, one bomber squadron with seventeen Mark IV Blenheims, and an anti-aircraft co-operation unit with twelve miscellaneous aircraft.
All squadrons except No. 488 had been passed as ‘trained to operational standards’ by the time war broke out, but experience was to show that their training had been based on an underestimate of the Japanese Air Force.

In June 1923, the squadron was re-formed at Bircham Newton as a heavy bomber unit.
In September 1927, when the squadron won the Laurence Minot memorial bombing trophy for the first time, Wing Commander Portal was bomb-aimer for Squadron Leader EO Grenfell, with whom he formed the winning crew.
In 1942 minelaying was added to the squadron's duties and in May and June its Stirlings took part in the 1,000-bomber raids on Cologne, Essen and Bremen.

The squadron was not left in limbo, for on 1 February 1920 it was reformed at Bircham Newton from disbanding No.274 Squadron's personnel.
The squadron remained in Bomber Command until disbanding on 1 March 1950 at Mildehhall, having converted to Lincolns late in 1949.
The squadron retained these until the Valiant force was grounded, and it disbanded on 1 May 1965, having used its aircraft in anger at Suez.

Among the highlights of No. 78's war record was its participation in the historic 1,000 bomber raid on Cologne 30/31st May, 1942; the epic raid on Peenemünde on 17/18th August 1943; and the attack on the coastal gun battery at Mont Fleury on 5/6th June 1944 in direct support of the invasion of Normandy.
In February 1941, No. 78 Squadron supplied the Whitleys and some of the crews (other crews were provided by No. 51 Squadron) which figured in Operation Colossus, the first Allied airborne operation of the war and the one in which British paratroops destroyed a large aqueduct at Tragino in southern Italy.
On 7 May 1945, No. 78 Squadron was transferred from Bomber Command to Transport Command and in September of that year, after having converted to Dakota aircraft, it was sent to Almaza in Middle East Command.

No.7 Squadron was formed 1st May 1914 at Farnborough as a Scout squadron, and went to France April 1915, equipped with the Vickers Gunbus.
At the outbreak of World War II, the squadron was equipped with Handley Page Hampdens, until August 1940, when it equipped with the RAF's first four engined bomber, the Short Stirling Mk I - becoming the first RAF squadron to be equipped with four engined bombers.
On 12th December 1981 the squadron was again disbanded, reforming soon after as the second operational Boeing Vertol Chinook helicopter Squadron on 2nd September 1982.

With the foundation of the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918, all ex-RNAS squadrons were given the prefix "200" to avoid confusion with the RFC squadrons.
To 'celebrate' this occasion, on the last night of March 1918 preparations were put in hand for a raid in the early hours of 1 April against Bruges Docks and Thourout railway junction, involving four Handley Pages from 207 Squadron, (HPs 1459, 3128, 3119 and 1462), and five from 214 Squadron.
It was the last raid to be flown by 207 Squadron for the moment because on 22 April the unit was withdrawn first to Cappelle and then to Netheravon, England, later moving to Andover on 13 May, in order to re-equip with new Handley Page 0/400s and to train replacement air and ground crews.

When I found this photograph, I had no idea that I would come so far with it, I thought that it would remain one of those forgotten incidents and be confined to a drawer somewhere, I am glad I took up the challenge.
On October 9, 1944, MJ730 was transferred again to 32 Sqn., RAF at Kalamaki, Greece The aircraft was chosen by Sqn.
Cpl Tylee therefore painted a permanent mark on the aircraft and it was thenceforth known by squadron personnel as 'The CO's Query'.

ND845 was one of 600 Mk III Lancasters delivered to the RAF from December 1943 to May 1944 by A V Roe (Chadderton).
Delivered to No.7 Squadron, it was lost on the night of 19th/20th May 1944, whilst acting as Master Bomber on a raid against the railway marshalling yards at Le Mans.

By his coolness and determination in the face of opposition he has set an outstanding example to the men he leads.
