74 Squadron were to spend a relatively short time at Wattisham in modern-day terms, their spell lasting a mere eight years from 1984 to '92.
The Falklands campaign of 1982 was to be instrumental in the re-birth of 74 Squadron, as immediately after the conflict with the creation of RAF Mount Pleasant there was a need for a full-time fighter squadron to mount air defence.
The author, Squadron Leader Doug Tidy MA RAF (ret) served with the Squadron in WW2 with five Commanding Officers.

Lightning F2A 'Lightning Thunder' take off, Limited Edition Signed Print by aviation artist and ex RAF Jaguar pilot, Michael Rondot.
He commanded the first RAF Lightning squadron when No.74 Sqn converted from Hunters to Lightnings in 1960, and led the famous No.74 Sqn 'Tigers' nine-ship Lightning aerobatic team.
In 1977 he commanded No.92 Sqn, the last Lightning F2A unit in RAF Germany.
Of all the classic fighters to have served with the RAF since the l950s, no other aircraft had the raw power and breathtaking performance of the Lightning, and of all the variants the F2A was considered to be the best.

 MAe Fury
The RAF finally granted Controller (Air) Release to service for the Fury F.1 in 2292, after the WDS was upgraded to the Release 92 software standard, but without clearance for Gungnir carriage and without the Full Operational Clearance which represented the final payment milestone in MAe's development contract.
The 8 squadrons would have been in the front line of the immediate response to a Kafer landing, but thanks to victory in the Battle of Beowulf they were never called upon.
However as only one squadron was to be procured for the defence of the East Coast cities the sale of the Fury F.1 was approved and after training in Britain the Air Wing's 6 Squadron became active near Heorot on 24 October 2296.

 Silent Sentinel
On 29 December 1964 92 Squadron left Leconfield for RAF Geilenkirchen in Western Germany, but its stay was relatively brief as another move was made in early 1968 to join 19 Squadron at RAF Gutersloh - it was deemed more economical to operate all the Germany-based Lightnings from one base.
She first flew on 26 October of that year, piloted by test pilot T. Ferguson, and was issued to 92 Squadron at RAF Leconfield on 1 April 1963 (it isn't clear what she did in the intervening eighteen months).
RAF Geilenkirchen was finally closed on 28 January 1968 with flying operations ceasing that same day.

Humbrol's bird had a varied life, beginning with 54 Squadron in 1957 and moving on through the AFDS, RAE Bedford and finally 4 FTS at RAF Valley, ending its days as a gate guard at RAF Chivenor.
However 20 Squadron at Laarbruch (then a Tornado unit that had previously flown Hunters) sought permission to save the aircraft for display and so in 1984 XE606 was given a facelift, becoming XJ673 (the CO of 20 Squadron's personal aircraft in the 1960s) in the process.

In 1962, he became Officer Commanding, No. 92 Squadron, as it converted to the English Electric Lightning.

On the station's closure, Humbrol (owners of Airfix) bought themselves this big kit and stuck it on a pole outside their plant in Hull; the amount of work necessary being considerably less than normal as the aircraft had been placed in similar position at Chivenor after a full restoration in 1990.

 Digby
On 22nd January, the Belgian pilot, and 'B' flight commander, Flight Lieutenant Jean "Peike" Offenberg DFC was killed in a mid-air collision, the effect of a mock attack by a pilot of 92 Squadron.
However, as the Belgians formed the nucleus of the squadrons pilots and were exempt from overseas service (Belgium had no interest in either the Mediterranean or Far East Theatres), and the remaining Yorkshire Auxiliary groundcrew could not be posted since they were territorials, 609 Squadron never lost its core or individual personality.
Digby was a difficult station for 609, as their time was largely taken up with training new pilots - taking in many new Belgian's and over a dozen new NCO's prior to their posting to various other squadrons.
