Nobel is named after Alfred Nobel, because it was once the home of an explosives and munition factory during the great wars of the Twentieth Century.
Nobel is of historical interest to Canadians because it was home of the Orenda Engines factory where the Iroquois gas turbine engine was being developed.

The recent appearance of a CUPE official carrying a CUPE flag at a rally protesting a Toronto speaking engagement by former Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was the last straw, she said.
Nobel said she was told by a national CUPE official the flag had been stolen or was missing and there would be an investigation into the circumstances of its appearance at the protest.
Nobel said her local now feels itself "a minority" in the CUPE family.

In 1918 he was wounded at the battle of Cambrai and in 1919 he was awarded the Military Cross for heroism under fire.
From 1920 until 1921 he did part-time teaching in orthopaedics at the University of Western Ontario at London, Canada, besides his general practice, and from 1921 until 1922 he was Lecturer in Pharmacology at the University of Toronto.
Prior to the award of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 1923, which he shared with Macleod, he received the Reeve Prize of the University of Toronto (1922).

The third basic explosive produced at Nobel was guncotton, cotton fiber treated with a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids to form nitrocellulose, a highly volatile substance.
At Nobel, some guncotton was pressed into brick-sized blocks used by army engineers to demolish bridges and such, but the bulk of it was used as an ingredient in the manufacture of the plant’s bread and butter item, cordite.
