Technically, the first plastic explosive was Gelignite, invented by Alfred Nobel in 1875, though it was supplied in sticks as per dynamite and could not be moulded into shapes.
Nobel 808 had the appearance and physical characteristics of green plasticine and a distinctive smell of almonds.
The samples of explosive brought to the USA by the Tizard Mission had already been packaged by the SOE ready for dropping to the French Resistance and were therefore labelled in French, as Explosif Plastique.

Until the Norwegian Nobel Committee was established in 1904, the President of Norwegian Parliament made the formal presentation of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Although Nobel's will established the prizes, his plan was incomplete and, due to various other hurdles, it was five years before the Nobel Foundation could be established and the first prizes awarded on December 10, 1901.

This year is a special one to recall Wallace Graham’s friendship with Philip Hench because it is the 50th anniversary of the Nobel prize in medicine honoring Hench, Kendall, and Reichstein, and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Nobel prizes.
Professor Liljestrand in his Nobel citation about Hench notes “your brilliant investigations in respect of the beneficial effects of pregnancy and jaundice on rheumatoid arthritis have been the starting point for the famous discovery during [the preceding year] that these diseases and some others are favorably influenced by hormones from the adrenal cortex.”
It is easy to speculate that the pivotal role of Wallace Graham in the establishment of the Gairdner awards was inspired by the Nobel prize awarded to his good friend Philip Hench only a few years earlier.
