As a film on itself, Nochnoy dozor is all set-up and no pay-off, but as the first instalment in a trilogy the film shows enough promise to wait with a final verdict until the trilogy is complete.
Nochnoy dozor is indeed very heavy on exposition and it takes its time to make you understand how this parallel world functions.
It is hard to judge Nochnoy dozor on its own, because it clearly is part of something bigger which as yet remains unseen.

“Nochnoy Dozor” has been widely advertised in Russia and there was a lot of hype about it.
Some people were even weighting it as an answer to Hollywood.

Nochnoi Dozor, on the other hand, shows the Russian imagination and technology in its true light, able to compete and stand side-by-side.
It is said that wreckers and saboteurs are already infiltrating the local studios and industry, and that the MPAA is preparing to enforce sanctions against Russia to strangle her and bring her to her knees.
Nochnoi Dozor, like Vladimir Vladimirovich, is no worse than anything in the West, and does not besmirch Russia's image.

Set in contemporary Moscow, NIGHT WATCH (NOCHNOI DOZOR) revolves around the conflict and balance maintained between the forces of light and darkness -- the result of a medieval truce between the opposing sides.
As night falls, the dark forces battle the super-human “Others” of the Night Watch, whose mission is to patrol and protect.
But there is constant fear that an ancient prophecy will come true: that a powerful “Other” will rise up, be tempted by one of the sides, and tip the balance plunging the world into a renewed war between the dark and light, the results of which would be catastrophic.

If you're unfamiliar, "Nochnoy Dozor"--or "The Nightwatch"-- it is a Russian fantasy epic, the first of a planned trilogy that just finished smashing box office records in Russia becoming the highest grossing film of all time there beating out "Spider-Man 2".
Before the Hollywood butcher shop decided to hack their way in to a crappy remake, I decided to grab a hold of the original film, and I wasn't disappointed.
"Nochnoy Dozor" a soon to be trilogy of mass proportions is the classic tale of good and evil, with a modern twist that harkens to "Underworld" and "Lord of the Rings".

I saw this last night and whilst the story isnt anything new the film is told with such style it doesnt matter, the fight against 2 vampires using a mirror is fantastic.
