Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Nocturama (Mute)
Recorded in early 2002 at SingSing studios in Melbourne by The Bad Seeds line up of Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Blixa Bargeld, Thomas Wydler, Martyn Casey, Conway Savage, Jim Sclavunos and Warren Ellis, the new album was produced by Nick Launay and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds and mixed at Olympic Studios in London.
His input to the "Nocturama' sessions brought out the power and energy in the band, exploiting the combustible potential of the musicians.
There is a tender sunset song of hope; an elegant piano song of longing; a yawing, dark violin waltz; a swaggering pledge of love; a raucous abominable tale; a sorrowful evocation of loss; a nostalgic meditation; a fragrant love epiphany; and one final, lustful demonic epic.

Punknews.org | Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Nocturama
"Nocturama" seems to be quite the departure from his past work [according to one of my roommates who is a huge Nick Cave fan, who declared to me "this is crap!" after I let him borrow the disc].
Nocturama is far from Nick's best - that would be The Boatman's Call or Henry's Dream - but it's still absolutely essential listening.
Funny how if a group of 20-somethings sing about their ex-girlfriend we mock them, but here is a grown man approaching old age bellowing out his pain and we applaud him for his artistic merit.

Well, I can say right away that "Nocturama" is not as good as that one, but then you must have in mind that this is a different kind of album.
The whole feeling of "Nocturama" is very warm and it almost feels as if the band is in my living room when I listen to it.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Nocturama: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
So when Nocturama was reported as an attempt to "do it like they used to do it," referencing the prodigious output of his elder folk influences as well as the sturm-und-drang of his own early work, I furrowed my brow with concern.
Cave and his Seeds unearthed the distinctive roots of Blues tradition, holding them aloft with bloody hands and the panache of a hellacious sideshow emcee, they continue to consciously avoid the schtick that made them indie darlings.
It fits squarely in his personal hall of fame, and in particular makes a moldy joke of the remainder of Nocturama; they didn't all need to be this good, but a few more stormy rattlings of this caliber are sorely missed.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Nocturama - PopMatters Music Review
The fruits of that March 2002 intensive comprise Nocturama, the first in what's promised as a series of more spontaneous/less refined Bad Seeds projects to be released over the next couple of years.
Considering the stellar talent among the Bad Seeds ranks, this isn't all bad (as is immediately apparent from the loosely ethereal instrumental sections of the leadoff track "Wonderful Life"), but it ultimately sounds as if Cave is altogether abandoning refinement for spontaneity's sake rather than simply loosening the reigns a bit.
The biggest culprit in dragging Nocturama through the mud, however, is the first single "Bring It On", arguably Cave's biggest shot at mainstream radio airplay since "Straight To You".

 NOCTURAMA - CAVE, NICK & THE BAD SEEDS - NOCTURAMA - MUTE - -
"Nocturama" - his (strewth!) 12th studio album with dark and dapper henchmen The Bad Seeds - is testament once again to the unstinting power of the great man's muse.
That said, the one aspect of Cave's work that was causing the odd worry line for this reviewer was his apparent desire to continually refine his songs and their presentation.
"Nocturama" also harbours a further clutch of classics in the heady intrigue of "There Is A Town," the almost perky (steady on!) "Rock Of Gibraltar" and the sumptuous "She Passed By My Window", emboldened by Ellis' heavenly violin emblems.

Mute.com: Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds - Nocturama
"Nocturama" combines the gracefulness and nakedness of "No More Shall We Part" and "The Boatman's Call" with the sinuous energy of earlier works.
The band's sheer pleasure in playing together built on the intention to loosen up the process and "Nocturama" emerged with rawness in both the driven and the gentle songs.
"Nocturama" spans emotional surrender to venomous fl humour and engages in a wide range of themes.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Nocturama [2003] Shaking Through.net: Music: Review
Nocturama certainly includes its share of spare ballads and somber meditations on marriage and faith, but it also sports a raw, less-refined quality, evoking the spirit of earlier albums like From Her to Eternity and The Firstborn Is Dead.
While the slow numbers still outnumber the hard-charging, full-blooded cuts, Nocturama proves the fire still rages within Cave's belly, a fact that saves it from becoming a mere retread of ideas more fully explored in his recent work.
Nocturama falls short of the masterful Boatman's Call, and lacks the unifying lyrical and musical themes found on No More Shall We Part.

Review | Nocturama by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
One would be rather hard-pressed to accuse Cave of softening in his middle age after experiencing Nocturama's occasional cacophonies.
Though the album's first five tracks are vintage Cave with a surprising burst of energy in "Bring it On," and the beautifully hyper "Dead Man in My Bed," the tracks that follow ring hollow and boring by comparison.
Nonetheless, Nocturama demonstrates that, even in his less inspired moments, Nick Cave's commitment to authenticity and poetry remains a beacon shimmering in the darkness of pop music's bleak landscape.

Nocturama is as slight and as pretty as a walk through the snow on a sunny Winter day.
Nocturama isn't an awful record, just a problematic one, mostly due to the fact that the spontaneous studio atmosphere under which he's trying to operate doesn't allow for the careful crafting that bore his prior masterpieces.
Nocturama isn't the weakest album in Nick Cave's canon, but it's far from being a particularly good one either.

Nocturama is Nick Cave's 12th album with the Bad Seeds and he has lost none of his poetic imagination, rousing romanticism and spine-tingling verve.
Having recorded Nocturama at break-neck speed, and with the Blockheads working on three tracks, Cave has created a feisty record that mixes edgy spontaneity (the 15-minute, 43-verse "Babe I'm On Fire") with heart wrenchingly tender ballads such as "Still in Love".

Songs such as Lime Tree Arbour and Into My Arms were fabulously melancholic and pared-down, though Cave has since been dismissive of the album - he was, he says, "making a big heroic melodrama out of a bog-standard rejection by a woman".
The most mesmerising songs on the Bad Seeds' new album, Nocturama - the graceful Wonderful Life and the nostalgic There Is A Town - are tender affairs, full of sadness.
Nocturama has its dark moments, too, however - Dead Man In My Bed, for example, has a venomous humour, while the macabre Babe, I'm On Fire is a song about "all humanity in a combustible state", says Cave.

"Nocturama" doesn't contain the frenetic energy of the early Bad Seeds work, nor does it need to.
Yes, it gets wearing there for a minute or two (just as it hits about 10min) but then it just dawns on you that it's still as good and fresh as it was at the start, no matter how long it is.
Some people say that "Nocturama" was just a vehicle to launch "Babe, I'm On Fire".

Cave is the king of passionate, darkly beautiful pop songs and Nocturama's ten mesmerizing tracks maintain his position on the throne.
Nocturama, Nick Cave's twelfth studio album with the Bad Seeds, is a far cry from 2001's No More Shall We Part, but is just as impressive.
That said, Nocturama has some outstanding music and lyrics, especially Wonderful Life, There Is a Town, and Babe, I'm on Fire.

It seems there's nothing that inspires a great artist more than putting out a new album--particularly if it happens to be coming out on a new label.
This isn't to suggest that Cave is going to go quietly--see "Dead Man In My Bed" and the exhausting final track "Babe, I'm On Fire." Nick at night still has plenty of rancor in his soul and a heavy chain to rattle.
And best of all is the fact that Nocturama finds Cave back with his longtime mates the Bad Seeds.

Those qualities are still present on Nocturama, most notably in the brokenhearted violin that winds through "Right Out of Your Hand" and "She Passed by My Window." But Cave's arrangements embrace a range of styles and textures.
'Nocturama' is a suitably dark record that features a range of styles for Cave.
Always dark and with Cave's weathered and rich voice, Nocturama is beautifully bluesy and gorgeously unhinged, as evidenced on the disturbing and understatedly menacing 'There Is A Town'.

The album opens with a nice track in the warm layers of "Wonderful Life." It again moves in a rather contemplative way, but like the better songs on his last release, he seems completely as ease with things, and the results show.

However, The Bad Seeds 2004 are a rather different set up from the band who recorded Nocturama with Blixa Bargeld leaving and former Gallon Drunk frontman James Johnston joining.
Whereas Nocturama was deliberately written fast and furious, Cave spent “a long time” locked away writing the songs that would eventually become Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus.
