In a longitudinal study measuring self-report, behavioral, and nocturnalpeniletumescence variables before and after treatment with cognitive behavior therapy in an unmedicated sample of 40 outpatient depressed men, we found, contrary to expectation, that sexual activity per se was not reduced during the depressed state.
Nocturnalpeniletumescence alterations in depression may thus be similar to other persistent electroencephalographic sleep abnormalities seen in depressed patients in remission, in being more trait-like than statelike.
Also, contrary to expectation, nocturnalpeniletumescence abnormalities in depressed men did not reverse when measured in early remission, nor did nocturnalpeniletumescence measures correlate significantly with behavioral measures of sexual function.
We recently showed that testosterone stimulates nocturnalpeniletumescence in hypogonadal men in addition to increasing sexual activity and spontaneous erections, but erections elicited in the laboratory during psychophysiological testing were not affected by hypogonadism or testosterone treatment (Kwan et al., 1983).
Nocturnalpeniletumescence was measured using home monitors in order to estimate estrogen-induced changes in erectile capacity.
Relationships between free testosterone level and nocturnalpeniletumescence (% of sleep time in maximum erection x degree of tumescence, see Methods) throughout the various periods of observation during the study.

Nocturnalpeniletumescence (NPT): spontaneous erection of the penis during sleep occuring from birth to advanced old age, typically in three episodes a night for a total of 2-3 hours...
testosterone levels, making psychological evaluations, monitoring nocturnalpeniletumescence (swelling), and conducting vascular or neurologic examinations.
Other Tests may include: monitoring erections that occur during sleep (nocturnalpeniletumescence) can help rule out certain psychological causes of ED.
Prostate-specific antigen, prostate volume, nocturnalpeniletumescence, total and free testosterone, prolactin, luteinizing hormone, erectile function scores, depression, fatigue and other parameters were assessed before treatment, at three months, and after the treatment period.
Erectile function, sexual desire, sexual satisfaction and nocturnalpeniletumescence increased over the course of the study in the group receiving testosterone as well as the group receiving carnitine.
Erectile function and nocturnalpeniletumescence were significantly more improved in this group than in those receiving testosterone.

Nocturnalpeniletumescence testing with the RigiScan at 4-6 months in 2 patients demonstrated erections that approach minimal criteria for normalcy.
To confirm the findings of this report, we are continuing to monitor the erectile function with interviews, validated questionnaires, and nocturnalpeniletumescence testing in patients with bilateral nerve resection and grafts.
Using electrical stimulation with resultant tumescence as criteria, these investigators found return of potency in 50-58% of rats, in comparison to 5-11% for the nerve ablated group at 2 and 4 months, respectively.

Thirteen patients had nocturnalpeniletumescence monitoring performed by a Rigi Scan.
Diagnostic criteria for a normal study was more than 2 erectile episodes per night, a tip rigidity greater than 60%, and a duration of at least 5 minutes.
This study evaluates the sensitivity and specificity of decreased nocturnaltumescence in evaluating autonomic dysfunction in diabetic patients with erectile dysfunction and normal penile blood flow.
Variations in nocturnaltumescence in association with REM sleep remain the most appropriate testing modality for diabetic erectile dysfunction as opposed to causes of non-organic origin.
examines whether the Rigiscan device for measuring nocturnaltumescence can detect parasympathetic cardiovascular dysfunction in diabetic men with erectile dysfunction. The cause of erectile dysfunction in the two groups studied was not stated and other parameters such as androgen levels were not given.
An episode of nocturnalpeniletumescence was defined as an abrupt increase in penile base circumference that corresponded with a 3-mm or greater change in pen deflection that was maintained for at least five minutes.
Nocturnalpeniletumescence studies are commonly used to assess sexual dysfunction in diabetic men.
On the third night, patients were awakened at the point of maximal tumescence, and fullness of erection was estimated and penile buckling force was measured.
Nocturnalpeniletumescence (NPT) testing is a portable, non-invasive, technique that electronically monitors the frequency, rigidity, and/or circumferential changes of erections during REM sleep.

We suggest that abrogation of joint synchrony among hypothalamically directed pituitary hormones and a neurogenically organized sexual response (nocturnalpeniletumescence) can be unified thematically under an hypothesis of disrupted central nervous system hypothalamo-pituitary network coordination in human aging.
Such implicit disarray of multinodal communication is of consequence both scientifically and clinically, especially in proposing aging theories and intervention strategies.
Among one-variable results, only ApEn of LH release was significantly higher in older individuals at 1.323 +/- 0.058 vs. 0.897 +/- 0.089 in younger subjects (P = 0.0019), signifying greater disorderliness of the LH secretory process in aged men.
