Node (networking) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A node is a device that is connected as part of a computer network.
Nodes can be computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), cell phones, or various other network appliances.
Nodes that actively route data for the other networked devices as well as themselves are called supernodes.

Firewall (networking) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computing, a firewall is a piece of hardware and/or software which functions in a networked environment to prevent some communications forbidden by the security policy, analogous to the function of firewalls in building construction.
Network firewalls, normally running on a dedicated network device or computer positioned on the boundary of two or more networks or DMZs (demilitarized zones).
Network layer firewalls operate at a (relatively) low level of the TCP/IP protocol stack as IP-packet filters, not allowing packets to pass through the firewall unless they match the rules.

 NetWorking "N" Definitions and Concepts
The network architecture, which is defined by the cabling used, by the method used to access the network, and by the format of a data packet on the network.
Network architectures differ in the cabling used (coaxial, twisted-pair, fiber-optic), the methods used to access the network (CSMA/ CD, token passing, polling), the format of data packets sent across the network, and the network topology.
Network administration refers to the task of managing and maintaining a network, to make sure all programs are up to date, all hardware is functioning properly, and all authorized users are able to access and work on the network.

 Introduction to Windows Peer-to-Peer Networking
A peer graph, or graph, is a set of nodes that are multiply connected to form a coupled network of nodes for the purposes of propagating data in the form of records or point-to-point data streams.
Both Node A and Node B have the same information in their record databases for the graph: a Signature record with the graph signature set to 1 and a Contact record for Node A with the graph signature set to 1.
Node D notes that Node A sent it a new Signature record with graph signature of 1, which is lower than the current graph signature.

The arguments to `ether_input' are a pointer to the interface data structure, a pointer to the ethernet header and a pointer to an mbuf containing the packet itself.

Lecture 7: Introduction to Networking   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
A LAN is simply a network where all nodes on the networks are reasonably close to one another in a geographic sense.
The alternating 1 and 0 bits allow nodes on the network to "lock onto" the data transmission; when the final two 1 bits of the SOF are sent, all nodes should be synchronized to the signals.
Every node maintains a routing table which enables it to determine, given a destination IP address, the physical (MAC) address of the "best" node to relay the information to (which may not be the destination node).

 NETWORKING
network is a network where all computers act as both servers and clients and data files can be shared.
Routers not only know the addresses of the computers on the network but are aware of all the other bridges and routers on the network and can decide the most efficient path in which to send data.
The router uses a routing table of network addresses to determine where to forward the packet. When a router receives data, it discards the outer packet or frame or MAC address, repackages the data with network address, and retransmits the signal.

Dial-up Networking   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
What is really taking place is that you are establishing a network protocol connection (such as TCP/IP) over a network adapter (your dial-up adapter, usually your modem) and being assigned a node address of some type.
The network on the other end accepts you and establishes you as a node.
If you are using AOL or Compuserve or some other ISP, dial in to their network as you normally would, leave them connected and logged in in the background and then bring up Anzio Lite or AnzioWin to connect to a specific host.

In a 32-bit IP address, the number of bits used to identify the network and the host vary according to the network class of the address.
In a Class C network, the first 3 bits, or the high-order bits, are always "110." The next 21 bits are used to define the Class C network, and the final eight bits are used to identify the host.
Only 126 of these networks are available, however each class A network can handle 16,777,214 IP addresses or computers.

The non-volatile memory driver configuration table is typically an array of structures with each structure containing the information for a particular area of non-volatile memory.
After validating the minor number and arguments, this call enables writes to the specified memory area by invoking the "enable writes handler", then unprotecting the memory area, and finally actually writing to the indicated memory area.
