  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Noel Furlong
Furlong began playing poker in 1984, and in his first trip to the World Series of Poker, he placed 6th in the main event.
Noel went to local all-Irish schools where they didn’t speak English, instead every subject was studied through the medium of Irish, which basically is a dead language, just as Latin is. He left college at 17 and never attended university.
Noel was first dragged to Las Vegas by Terry in 1989 and got to the final table of the championship event, purely by luck.

Furlong admits that he is mainly a recreational poker player, but few question his skill.
Although Furlong is an amateur player, poker observers say that he is one of the most unpredictable poker players in the world, with a style that can be pretty wild and aggressive.
Furlong is a very private man, and some say he’s really quite shy, so it isn’t surprising why little is known about him.

 1999 World Series of Poker - Event 16 - Day 4
Noel "J.J." Furlong took down the richest, most prestigious prize in the game when he won the 30th annual World Series of Poker $10,000 buy-in, no-limit championship event by flopping a full house and defeating Alan Goehring, 36, a New York corporate bond trader and analyst.
Furlong limped in pre-flop, calling the $20,000 one off the button, and he, Bigler and Parkinson saw the flop, which came Jh-8s- 7h.
Furlong had flopped a full house, and hesitated long enough on the all-in bet to offer some hopes of a move rather than a monster.

Furlong bet $150K, which Goehring promptly raised to 300K, representing the flush.
Of course, Furlong’s constant aggression lured him into this situation, but with only two cards to improve Alan’s hand, when Furlong came over the top with an all-in bet, Goehring should have folded rather than resigning himself to his fate.
Neither came on the river and Furlong took home the bracelet and a cool million to throw on the stack.

UK PRODUCERS: Swimming against the tide. - Journal, Magazine, Article, Periodical
Furlong Flooring has been something of an enigma, largely because the company has, until now, adopted a deliberately low profile.
Try a Google search on the Internet, for example, and beyond stories of colourful founder Noel Furlong's gambling triumphs (such as the 1999 poker World Series) and a dated presence for Furlong's Dartford distribution centre, there is little to shed light on a group which employs 450 people and has a #75m turnover.
Former Carpets International and CV Carpets md Malcolm Gibson took over in that role for the Furlong group in the UK (made of separate warehousing, distribution, spinning and production businesses; see panel on p24) three years ago, and agrees the group's profile could be higher.
