Topic: Noise shaping

Noise shaping - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Noise shaping is used in many areas of digital signal processing, including digital audio and digital video.
Noise shaping in audio is most commonly done as a bit-reduction scheme.
By using noise shaping we can effectively spread the quantization error around so that more of it is focused on frequencies that we can't hear as well and less of it is focused on frequencies that we can hear.

Wavpack lossy mode noise shaping problem - Hydrogenaudio Forums   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The noise shaping value is actually a floating point value from -1.0 to +1.0.
By reducing the noise added at higher frequencies, it also tended to make the predictor work better which meant that hybrid lossless would get better compression and in some samples (that had little high frequencies) it could actually improve the total noise figure.
So, if the shaping used coefficients that were calculated with analysis of the original signal, then that must be repeated during decoding also (unless the required coefficients were updated infrequently enough that they could be quantized and sent in the correction file).

Dither and Noise Shaping   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The noise (original analog signal minus quantized signal) is normally uncorrelated in time and uncorrelated with the signal.
This means that the noise is constant and »white«, the power density is (nearly) constant, there are no peaks in it.
Noise shaping always increase the absolute unweighted power of the noise, but reduces the audible weighted noise.

The main function of noise shaping algorithm is spread the noise from the audio spectrum into higher spectrum where it can be later filtered out with a high pass filter.
In effect, noise shaping attempts to cancel error by subtracting it from the input signal distortion in analog amplifiers."(Pohlman p.149) For our project, the adders and registers conducts the aforementioned tasks.
Since the register is always storing the differences between the input and output, the output is tracking the input through the use of the register and the feedback.
