Print Article: Noisy miner's influence felt
An environmental monster is lurking in the suburban gardens of eastern Australia in the unlikely form of a cute-looking native bird, the noisy miner.
The noisy miner is spreading fast, aggressively driving other native birds from urban areas, while in rural woodlands, it is being pinpointed as a factor in the decline of many small bird species.
He said the noisy miner's close relative, the bell miner, is also spreading in Melbourne, moving up the Yarra River and into the Botanic Gardens, and is similarly driving out other native birds from areas it colonises.

Within noisy miner colonies, the abundance and species richness of other birds were both about half those recorded at nearby transects which were outside the colonies' main activity area.
Bird species smaller than noisy miners, which are also those with similar diets, were collectively 20-25 times more abundant, and their species richness tenfold greater, outside miner colonies than within them, whereas larger species, which have less dietary overlap, did not differ.
Aggression by noisy miners can be viewed as a mechanism of interspecific competition, since miners have a relatively large body size for their diet and are hence able to exclude virtually all potential competitors at relatively little cost.

Noisy Miners are increasing in abundance in urban areas, and it has been suggested that the choice of these plants may play a role in this increase.

Introducing native plants into your garden may be to the detriment of many birds, as the miner's spread has been facilitated by the proliferation of popular flowering trees such as grevilleas and banksias.

Previous research suggests that the presence of Noisy Miners in gardens is the key factor reducing the abundance of small birds in urban areas.
A total of 560 minutes of foraging activity was also recorded on 45 Noisy Miners in the same suburbs (but not the same gardens), to determine the relative importance of different foods in their diet.
Noisy Miners were significantly more common in gardens that contained eucalypts, but they were no more common in gardens with grevilleas, unless those gardens also contained eucalypts.

Billy Miner, who carried out the only two train robberies in Canada, may not have been successful, but Westerners thought he had the right idea.
The train trip is almost over when gunshots ring out, horses gallop across the rail; the engineer is motioned down from his cab and made to hold the horses, leading to whispers among the passengers of his being in cahoots with the robbers.
Billy Miner himself then takes the megaphone and gives a brief history of railroading and ranching in the Canadian West, and of his own life on the run.

A Black-eared Miner Recovery Team was established in 1991, with representatives from Environment Australia, Birds Australia, wildlife agencies in Victoria, South Australia and NSW, the Museum of Victoria, the Melbourne and Adelaide Zoos, and zoologists and geneticists from La Trobe University.
Before European settlement, the fl-eared miner’s mallee home was a large, isolated island within the vast kingdom of the noisy miner and the two species did not interbeed.
But the yellow-throated miner had had no previous genetic contact with the fl-eared miner; as farming redrew the ancient geographic boundaries that formerly separated them, they interbred, and the hybrids began winning out as pure-bred fl-eared miners declined in numbers.
