Mottled Cup Moth Caterpillar   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The mottled cup moth caterpillar belongs to Family Limacodidae, one of the only two families in Australia whose species possess stinging hairs (the other is the Nolidae, commonly known as the gum leaf skeletonisers).
These envenomating hairs are tubular and contain a venom or irritant which is produced by a gland located at the base of the hair.
When the caterpillar comes into contact with a predator or human the tips of the poisonous hairs break and release their contents which often consists of histamines.

The concept of the Nolidae has been expanded recently (Speidel et al., 1996; Holloway, 1998; Kitching & Rawlins, 1998) to embrace the Sarrothripinae, Chloephorinae and Camptolominae as well as the Nolinae sensu stricto as treated here.
