Nome was incorporated in 1901, and its now within the Sitnasuak Native Corporation lands.
In the winter of 1925, a diphtheria epidemic among Eskimos in Nome was halted when, during fierce blizzard conditions, a sled team arrived with serum.
In 1925, Nome was the destination of the famous Mercy Race to Nome, where dog sleds played a large part in transporting diphtheria serum through harsh conditions.

Gulch gold was found near Nome on Anvil Creek in September 1898, and diggings in the ocean beach were first worked in July 1899.
The rush to Nome in 1900 was one of the most remarkable stampedes in American mining history; the town soon had hotels, banks, stores, several newspapers and weekly mails from the States, and for part of the year there were, it was estimated, 20,000 inhabitants.
In 1905 the gold output of the Nome region amounted to about $2,500,000, nearly all from placers, though some quartz mining was done.

Nome is far north of the tree line, and each year, the residents put all their Christmas trees (which have to be either collected from Council before the roads close for the winter or flown in) out on the ice after Christmas, and call it the Nome National Forest.
Birding close to Nome was wonderful, but as we got further afield, the proportion of snow to open tundra got greater, until we were driving through a surreal landscape of white road, white tundra and white sky.
We reported the poor thing when we got back to Nome and some wildlife folk were dispatched to destroy it, to prevent the spread of the disease to other foxes.

In 1925, a life-or-death race to rescue the children of Nome, AK, from disease made an international hero of one sled dog -- and eventually led to the creation of Alaska's Iditarod sled dog race, the subject of NATURE's SLED DOGS: AN ALASKAN EPIC.
