In the winter of 1925, a diphtheria epidemic among Eskimos in Nome was halted when, during fierce blizzard conditions, a sled team arrived with serum.
In 1925, Nome was the destination of the famous Mercy Race to Nome, where dog sleds played a large part in transporting diphtheria serum through harsh conditions.
