Nomonhan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nomonhan is a small village near the border between Mongolia and Manchuria, China south of the Chinese city of Manzhouli.
In the summer of 1939 it was the location of the Nomonhan Incident, as it is termed in Japan, or the Battle of Khalkhin Gol as it is known in Russia and (Outer) Mongolia.
The Japanese maintained that the border between the two states was the Halha River (also known as the Halhin Gol, or in Russian as the Khalkhin Gol), while the Mongolians and their Russian allies maintained that it ran some 16 kilometres/10 miles east of the river, just east of Nomonhan village.

Battle of Khalkhin Gol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Battle of Khalkhin Gol, sometimes spelled Halhin Gol or Khalkin Gol and alternately known as the Nomonhan Incident (after a nearby village) in Japan, was the decisive engagement of the undeclared Soviet-Japanese Border War (1939), or Japanese-Soviet War.
It should not be confused with the conflict in 1945 when the USSR declared war in support of the other Allies of World War II and launched Operation August Storm.
The incident began on 11 May 1939, when a Mongolian cavalry unit of some 70-90 men entered the disputed area in search of grazing for their horses, and encountered Manchukuoan cavalry who drove them out of the disputed territory.

To paraphrase the official Japanese history of Nomonhan, clearly a Japanese lack of firepower was the main reason for the emphasis on spiritual training, but contributing to the intangible factors was an absolute faith in night combat, especially a night attack that culminated in handto-band combat with the enemy.
Their difficulties were characteristic of what all Japanese infantrymen at Nomonhan encountered or indeed of the peculiar hazards of night combat.

It was a land of extreme climate; the summer temperature rose to 40 degrees while the winter temperature fell to -30 degrees Celsius.
The Japanese Kwantung Army (stationed in Manchukuo) claimed the Halha River as international boundary, while the Soviets and Mongolians claimed the border to be 15 miles to the east, near Nomonhan.

Perhaps most importantly Nomonhan documents the increasing independence of the KA, which had a malign and profound influence on the events leading to war.
Too, Nomonhan illustrates historically the failure of the Japanese to perhaps learn the more fundamental tactical and operational lessons of modern war in the climactic disaster along the Khalkin Gol River.

Nomonhan was the culmination of nearly fifty years of Russo – Japanese rivalry in the Far East.
As with Nomonhan however, other actions overshadowed the battle and its significance was lost in the rush of events following the death of President Roosevelt 12 April, the surrender of Germany 08 May and the detonation of atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.

BookkooB : Nomonhan - John Colvin : Compare Book Prices
The undeclared Kalkhin Gol war, or "Nomonhan Incident", between Japan and the USSR in 1939 is one of those tantalising subjects which we know to be important, but on which it is difficult to find out much in detail, though there are limited references to it in many books on the period.
One is aware that this massive but short-duratiion conflict, which involved large-scale air and armour deployments as well as ground troops, was the key factor in diverting Japanese aggression southwards from then onwards, thus abandoning a half-century of north westwards expansion.
The incident occurred at a critical juncture for the Soviet forces as well, reeling as they were from the impact of the purges of their senior commanders.
