Non sequitur (logic) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Non sequitur is Latin for "it does not follow." In formal logic, an argument is a non sequitur if the conclusion does not follow from the premise.
It should be stressed that in a non sequitur, the conclusion can be either true or false, but the argument is a fallacy because the conclusion does not follow from the premise.
It is a non sequitur (note that it is the exact same argument form as in example 1 - the form is always a non sequitur).

Logical Fallacies and the Art of Debate
Logic is a useful tool in this process, but it is not the only tool -- after all, "plausibility" is a fairly subjective matter that does not follow strict logical rules.
And there are some types of argument that are listed as logical fallacies in logic textbooks, but that are perfectly acceptable in the context of the rules of debate.
The best time to point out a non sequitur is when your opposition is trying to construct a chain of causation (A leads to B leads to C, etc.) without justifying each step in the chain.

If this is the case, I should take this moment to point out to the gestalt that it has, until now, been drawing its non sequiturs from the more non sequiturial end of the continuum and perhaps has overlooked the use of the word partial in the idea text.

 Fallacies in Logic
Non sequitur is Latin for “it does not follow” and is used when the conclusion drawn does not make sense based on the evidence presented.

This is the fallacy of non sequitur, the Latin words for "does not follow." A non sequitur describes a catch-all fallacy where the conclusion just does not follow from the given premises.
The term "non sequitur" is most often used when a statement openly contradicts itself and makes no sense.
If no other title can be ascribed to an argument’s logical irregularities, but the conclusion plainly does not follow from the premises, we can call those irregularities a non sequitur just for lack of any other title.

We've been talking about various ways of helping writers to structure their arguments so that they are clear, persuasive, and logical.
What we haven't yet discussed are ways that you might use instruction in logic in the tutoring session to help a writer analyze her ideas.
You'll want to take the opportunity to explain to the writer that an argument can be logical without being true (as in the second example).

Erroneous methods of inference yielding convincing falsehoods
Syllogisms generally take as their "major argument" universal statements of the general form "all A are B," and draw inferences about members of the class "A," as demonstrated by the classical example of a syllogism: "All men are mortal.
Socrates is a man. Therefore, Socrates is mortal." Arguments by logical implication take as their major arguments statements in the form "if A then B" and from them form arguments in the form "If A then B. A, therefore B." For purposes of the present discussion, logical implication and syllogism behave similarly.
An appeal to consequences argues that a proposition must be true because otherwise a consequence will follow which is unacceptable for reasons outside the logic of the argument.

Suggested Usage: This is a pretty harsh criticism of someone's logical powers, so it should be applied directly only in extreme circumstances and indirectly only with cause.

The Scope's trial was categorized in my 10 year old brain next to monarchy, slavery, and a flat Earth - something that people used to have to think about, but so foreign to what 'everyone' understood now that it was nothing more than a historical curiosity (I was 10, that's what I thought about history).
