Topic: Non zero sum

Book review: Non zero   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Non zero by Robert Wright (bearing the somewhat grandiose subtitle “The logic of human destiny”) is one of the most interesting books I’ve ever read, AND it tackles two of those questions in a thorough and readable way.
A zero sum game is one in which I have to loose in order for you to win.
One again, non zero cooperation can be seen as the driving force, and can be the explanation for many of symbiotic relations we see.

 Making Games Zero Sum
If the sum of all the scores of all the players is zero, and there is only one player, then his score will be zero too.
A basic theorem of game theory says that an n player non-zero sum game is equivalent to a n+1 player zero sum game, where the new player gets the negative of the sum of scores of the other players.
The first case could be called a zero sum two player game, and the second case a one player non-zero sum game.

Non Zero Sum is a progressive-rock band from Seattle, Washington.
Although the members of Non Zero Sum were raised in musical environments and discovered their talents young, it wouldn't be until 1998 when Joel Johns, Ryan Summers, and Jeff Johns started jamming; then decided to form a band.
Many fans have compared Non Zero Sum's sound to such artists as their music appeals to such a wide variety of musical tastes; yet it remains to be most unlike anything out there.

While infinite "zero sum" games (where two players have directly conflicting objectives) have been studied extensively in verification and automata theory, "non-zero sum" games (where each player has his/her own objective) have not.
For zero sum games, the fundamental solution concept is determinacy: to show that the value of player 1 is one minus the value of player 2.
For non-zero sum games, Sudderth and Secchi showed the existence of Nash equilibria in safety games, however, not much more is known.

 Book review of Robert Wright
Wright claims that this is a consequence of the mathematics of non-zero sum games: over the long run, the outcome of non-zero sum games tends to be more positive than negative.
He even seems to think that this new system (the medieval system of city-states) is an example of non-zero sum game (cooperation) instead of zero-sum game (competition), and the Roman Empire was the opposite, a reversal of their intuitive roles which is truly hard to understand.
On the contrary, it seems to this reader that the Roman Empire was one of the best examples of cooperation (non-zero sumness) and its disintegration led to an age of competition (zero zumness) among the former pieces of it.

Wright's iconoclastic view of the world is worth paying attention to because ultimately his notion of progress and civilization comes down to bits—memes migrating from one culture to the next—and if this really is an information age, then non-zero sumness is a simple equation that may unleash great power.

According to this theory, a conflict situation does not necessarily have to end with winners and losers, a situation described in game playing jargon as a "zero sum game," in the sense that both parties could be winners (a "non-zero sum game plus") or losers (a "non-zero sum game minus").
For instance, passing from a state of war to a state of peace could be perceived as a "non-zero sum game plus," in which both parties benefit from ending the hostilities and building peace.
Would this be a "non-zero sum game," with a plus for both parties, or a "zero sum game," where the plus for one party is actually a minus for the other?

Other non-zero-sum games are games in which the sum of gains and losses by the players are always more or less than what they began with.
For example, a game of poker played in a casino is a zero-sum game unless the pleasure of gambling or the cost of operating a casino is taken into account, making it a non-zero-sum game.

Still, on balance, over the long run, non-zero-sum situations produce more positive sums than negative sums, more mutual benefit than parasitism.
This basic sequence -- the conversion of non-zero-sum situations into mostly positive sums -- had started happening at least as early as 15,000 years ago.

Wright's aim is to knit together this theory with anthropology, zoology, biology, and history, plus a dash of chaos theory, and thus attest that "non-zero sum altruism" is the natural inclination of humankind.
To prove this he cites such disparate phenomena as the sago-swapping natives of the US Northwest, the global government-in-waiting that is the European Union, and the anarchically generous ethos that rules the Net--all of which apparently go to show that we are, deep down, caring, sharing nice guys.
The phrase "zero sum" is in fairly common use in the US, although I have not heard it much in Europe; it means an interaction where there is no overall, net gain for the parties concerned.

Slashdot | Can You Suggest Any Non-Zero Sum Games?
Zero-sum is a reference to game theory, which holds that any game in which there is one definite winner and one definite loser is a zero sum game: basically, a win is a +1, a loss is a -1, and when you sum the scores, you get zero.
There are a few examples of non zero-sum games: for example, "The Prisoner's Dilemma" is a non-zero sum game (and technically, it is a game, albeit a very serious one).
The reason that Zero Sum Games are so popular is that there is a point to them.
