NonStop is the "brand name" for Tandem's suite of high-availabiliy products, a brand that survived Tandem's takeover by (additional info and facts about Compaq) Compaq, and today after Compaq's takeover by (A unit of power equal to 746 watts) HP.
NonStop SQL continues to be offered as a part of this suite today.
NonStop SQL was a version of Ingres modified to run effectively on parallel computers, adding functionality for distributed data, distributed execution, and distributed transactions (the last being fairly difficult).

Sybase was a developer of the pioneering Ingres system that also led to Informix and NonStop SQL, as well as the majority of other SQL systems currently in use.
Sybase was traditionally the #2 database system behind Oracle, though it suffered a major downturn in fortune in the later half of the 1990s when Informix started outselling it by a wide margin.
The #3 position is occupied by Sybase's own offspring, Microsoft SQL Server.
