The Mick Sinclair Archive: Nona Hendryx
None Hendryx was born in Trenton, New Jersey a region described by urban anthropologists as 'a ghetto' and by Nona as "quite a nice place".
Her father had "a drink problem which led to a lack of emotional stability in the house" and there is a twinkle in her eye indicating understatement when she describes herself as having been "a mischievous youth".
Nona remembers: "Through our own personalities, the most important thing we did was to change how fl female groups were seen, what they wore, how they performed and what they could sing about.

Nona Hendryx - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Nona Hendryx (born October 9, 1944) is a vocalist known for her work as a solo artist as well as one-third of the trio LaBelle.
Stylistically, she can sometimes be compared to Grace Jones or Chaka Khan.
Since 1989, Nona apparently has recorded more than five albums worth of music, but has been unable to release any of it due to lack of interest from major (or even independent) record labels.

 TrouserPress.com :: Nona Hendryx
Following a mainstream hard-rock solo album in the '70s, ex-Labelle singer Nona Hendryx upped her rock-community hipness quotient considerably in the '80s.
The dance-funk is, unfortunately, more stimulating on paper than disc; Hendryx is a powerful singer and there are some slick production moves, but the tunes (with the exception of the memorable "Keep It Confidential") are too shapeless to be gripping.
Hendryx evidently still believes that any line worth singing is worth singing half a dozen times, but the well-arranged, muscular backing tracks keep moving, so things don't wind down — even when she drills a lyric into the ground.

The Austin Chronicle: Music: Spotlight: Nona Hendryx
If the question is "Where's Nona Hendryx been?" the answer is "Busy." With more lives than an alley cat, Hendryx's chameleonlike career is one of astonishing twists and turns.
Hendryx is an "ex-Bluebelle, ex-Labelle, and now music composer for stage and film," but that succinct assessment leaves gaps in the NYC-based performer's career.
Hendryx counts herself a fan of the "Lady Marmalade" remake in Moulin Rouge ("I do like Christina Aguilera"), yet she has her eye on a young singer of her own.

CMT.com : Nona Hendryx : Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
After Labelle called it quits in 1976, Hendryx released her self-titled debut record, which was an amazingly strong amalgam of soul and hard rock.
A strong album that's not as wild-eyed as her debut, Nona did spark greater interest in Hendryx's considerable talents, and after that, her solo career flourished to the point where she no longer needed studio work to supplement her income.
Although some of her late-'80s records sound a little formulaic, Nona Hendryx is a dynamic, daring, and extremely talented performer, who, as is often the case, didn't receive the credit she's due.

Nona hadn't come into her own yet as a writer but the next record would change all that.
In fact, these songs were so good that years later Patti herself cited "Sunday" as an example of a great song they'd done that never got the attention that Lady Marmalade did.
She says the line "It took me a while but I think I'm there..." is a reference to peaking on LSD--her one and only experience with drugs.

Hendryx made quite a departure with the album 'Skindiver'.
Starting with Nona's vocals, she is so powerful without being overwrought or oversung.
She has a husky, haunting voice that can still send shivers down my spine especially in the song '6th Sense' when she sings the final line "does anybody care".
