Nonlinear optics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nonlinear optics is the branch of optics that describes the behaviour of light in nonlinear media, that is, media in which the polarization P responds nonlinearly to the electric field E of the light.
This nonlinearity is typically only observed at very high light intensities such as provided by pulsed lasers.
In the language of nonlinear optics, the interacting beams result in a nonlinear polarization within the material, which coherently radiates to form the phase-conjugate wave.

Nonlinear optics has numerous applications in communications and optical computing, as nonlinear material effects allow for the design of switches, couplers, modulators, and all-optical signal processing systems.
Nonlinear optics also has a number of inherent benefits, such as the ability to compensate for dispersion and diffraction effects, as evidenced by temporal and spatial solitons.
The development of a suitable simulation tool for nonlinear optics is crucial if such effects and their applications are ever to be studied.

 Valerio Lucarini - Nonlinear Optics
My goal was discussing if in nonlinear optics it was possible to explicitely derive properties of the nonlinear susceptibilities such as Kramers-Kroenig relations and sum rules, which in linear Optics have played such a great role, having proved to be fundamental tools both in fundamental and applied research.
This team has probably contributed the most to the theory of Nonlinear Kramers-Kroenig relations and sum rules by improving the general theoretical results, by introducing algorithms to perform the calculations in both conceptual and more realistic models, and by specifying the results to many real physical systems.
Then we studied the case of the Pump and Probe nonlinear processes and together with the discussion of the range of validity of the results coming from the usual Kramers-Kroenig analysis we presented the contributions due to terms of the susceptibility that previous analyses had neglected and discussed its physical relevance.

APPLIED PHYSICS: ON EXTREME NONLINEAR OPTICS
The EUV is a difficult region of the spectrum for nonlinear optics because traditional frequency-conversion techniques generally rely on crystalline solids as the nonlinear medium, and solids are not transparent in the EUV.
Nevertheless, good reasons are driving the development of new light sources in that spectral range: Short-wavelength light is ideal as a structural and chemical spectroscopic probe and as a tool for nanoscale lithography.
Moreover, the physics of the process differs radically from traditional nonlinear optics because it is intimately linked to the attosecond time domain.
