Harvard University Press: Dionysiaca, I : Books 1-15 by Nonnos
Nonnos of Panopolis in Egypt, who lived in the fifth century of our era, composed the last great epic poem of antiquity.
The wild ecstasy inspired by the god is certainly reflected in the poet's style, which is baroque, extravagant, and unrestrained.
It seems that Nonnos was in later years converted to Christianity, for in marked contrast to the Dionysiaca, a poem dealing unreservedly with classical myths and redolent of a pagan outlook, there is extant and ascribed to him a hexameter paraphrase of the Gospel of John.

Though outside the main chronological frame of Classical literature, the oeuvre of Nonnos (fifth century A.D.) is yet significant for fully appreciating Greek thought.
Nonnos also uses the combination, if we are bold enough to bridge the transition from one poem to the other.
This is exactly the same as the pattern in Parmenides, with kosmon separated from the verb eipe, from the same root as epeôn, by a single word.

 Sannion's Sanctuary - Sannion's Scriptorium
Hence, the Dionysos of Nonnos is not a god (because a god is more than a man) nor is he a man, since humanity comes from man's frailty.
Like Apollonius of Rhodes, Nonnos is trying to prove that it is still possible to write an Epic in hexamater verse, but unlike Apollonius, Nonnos is never convinced by his creation, never carried away by the Muses, and so, neither are we.
Nonnos is just recounting myths which he has found in old books, here.

Struck by the outer beauty of Pelagia and having foreseen the spiritual greatness in her, the saint in his cell prayed long to the Lord for the sinner, grieving that the poverty attiring his soul could not compare with the splendid garb and beauty of the profligate.
The teaching made such an impression upon her, that betaken with the fear of God and bursting out in tears of repentance, she besought the saint for Baptism.

Not much studied through most of the twentieth century, Nonnos (fifth century A.D.) is arguably one of the most skilled craftsmen in the entire ancient Greek poetic tradition.
Current scholarship suggests that the ascription in the manuscript tradition of the Christian Paraphrase of John and the pagan Dionysiaca to the same author is in fact correct; see esp. Livrea, Prometheus 13, 1987, 97-123.
For an overall inroduction to Nonnos' Paraphrase of John, see Tony Prost's ongoing translation.

I want to share, from time to time, bits of Nonnos in the Greek, which are very difficult to render into English, but which constitute its idiosyncratic poetic charm.
The poem itself is a twenty one book Alexandrian epic paraphrase of the Gospel of John, written around 450 AD.

The slogan was nothing if not scurrilous to their belief, of course, having been crafted for just that purpose by their opponents in a cutting reference to the slur known to all as offered by Nonnos against their Christ.
It will take longer to describe the slur than it did to engage the ire of those targeted by its pronouncement in that age.
That so much of mediocre Nonnos has survived down the ages which have so contrarily arranged for the utter loss of almost all of superb Sappho drives home the unavoidable truth that there is in the end no accounting for taste.

In despair "she" cries aloud to Jupiter to make him act immediately: "Look how your heavens blaze from pole to pole—if fire consumes them the very universe will fall to dust.
Thus tradition holds that after the dreadful fall of Phaethon, and when order was re-established, Jupiter "catasterized" Phaethon, that is, placed him among the stars, as Auriga (Greek Heniochos and Erichthonios); and at the same time Eridanus was catasterized.
The problem which arose later is the one raised by Richard H. Allen, who remarks that "the Milky Way was long known as Eridanus, the Stream of Ocean," [n10 Star Names (1963), p.

 "F. X. KUGLER -- ALMOST A CATASTROPHIST")
Nonnos has deliberately devised a highly fantastic picture of extreme confusion among the stars; the author of Sibyls, V, 512ff., on the other hand, has portrayed actual astral changes, as they come about according to the accepted order in the course of seven months, as the effect of a battle.
All that was needed was that this regularly recurring sequence be captured as a unique event, and the sun-god Helios-Phaëthon hypostasised, and the myth was ready.” Against this, others, most recent among them Wilamowitz and Knaack, interpret Phaëthon as the morning star.
In the same way, the climb of Venus to its maximum elongation could be interpreted mythically as a striving for domination in the heavens.

Sacred Space: Historian and Writer Mark Prost has annouonced completion of his first ever English translation of the Gospel of John as written by Nonnos of Pannopolis.
The last great epic poet of antiquity, Nonnos of Panopolis created an inspired story of Jesus, fleshing out the bare Gospel tale, and showing the humanity of Christ and his apostles.
Each episode is brought to life in a way that is at once familiar, yet intriguing, as all the characters are developed, and speak with voices of their own.
