Nevertheless, the album was XTC's biggest success in the U.K., reaching number five on the album charts and launching the Top Ten single, "Senses Working Overtime." While on tour in March of 1982, Partridge collapsed while on-stage, suffering from exhaustion.
Mummer, the first album the studio-bound XTC recorded, appeared in the summer of 1983; former Glitter Band member Pete Phipps recorded the drum tracks for the record.
The album was a minor hit in both Britain and America, reaching number 28 and number 44, respectively; "Mayor of Simpleton" became XTC's only charting U.S. single, reaching number 72 while peaking at number 46 on the British charts.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Nonsuch [Remaster] - XTC at Epinions.com
Nonsuch always managed to stay below the radar of mass recognitions, but that doesn't stop it from being one of the strongest albums of the nineties.
The album opens with The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead, a song about martyrdom and the tendency of the establishment to fight against those who promote independent thought and equality for all.
Yes, it's a rather long track list for a pop album, but Partridge, Molding, and the rest of the band bring enough variety to the album, and arrange the songs so well, that the album never has a chance to drag.

Nonsuch's collection of moving, and clever tunes are for the most part gorgeous pop tempered with a brooding, almost jazzy quality.
Unlike their previous and excellent album Oranges And Lemons it steers away from guitar oriented pop/rock and goes for a lusher, orchestrated sound that is more akin to their Skylarking album.
On Nonsuch Andy Partridge writes some of the most beautiful songs of his career such as the haunting Rook or the charming Holly Up On Poppy, Andy's ode to his daughter riding her hobbyhorse.

Nevertheless, Twomey at times seems to not quite grasp what XTC was driving at in their music and their albums, and too often he takes some of their critics' comments far too seriously.
Were it not for these two albums, the band certainly would not have gone on to create such masterpieces as Skylarking, Oranges and Lemons, and their latest release Apple Venus Volume 1.
In addition, both albums were full of experimentation as the band had begun to alter their sound rather than repeating what they had already perfected on Black Sea and English Settlement.

White Music, the band's first full-length album, was recorded in a week and released by the end of the year.
However, none of the singles released from the album charted (including "This Is Pop"), nor did "Are You Receiving Me?," the teaser single for their second album, Go 2 (1978).
Upon its release the album was hailed as a masterwork by critics, even though the band were claiming they were unsatisfied with the production.

 Chalkhills: Reviews: XTC: "Nonsuch"
Nonsuch (named, aptly, after a vanished Elizabethan palace) is very much malt XTC, a fine blend of all their various styles matured to an extraordinary refinement.
The album is both a continuation of the direction XTC went in with "Oranges and Lemons", and a departure.
Nonsuch maintains that high level of cynicism and sarcasm; witness ‘The Smartest Monkeys’ or the defiant ‘Books are Burning’.

Being that this was the first album put out by Stratovarius, I have to say that I am impressed to hear that they were good even back then.
Maybe not everyone would agree this album is incredibly good, but for those of you who are open minded, like Stratovarius' other albums, and appreciate early metal, you should give it a try.
I was very excited to see that Off Broadway had a new album out-about 17 years after their last one.And to top that off, they now have Mimi Betinis from the shoulda-been legendary Pezband.

From the carnival-like atmosphere of Omnibus to the torchy elements of Bungalow, that the band prove that their tongues are still firmly in their cheeks.
Throughout Nonsuch, one is struck by the strong melodies, innovative and vibrant arrangements and pristine instrumentation.
Thus, the album is special to me although in hindsight, it does not sound as perfect as I once believed.

 XTC Nonsuch CD
XTC's NONSUCH falls somewhere between the high-polish shine of ORANGES & LEMONS and the pastoral reverie of SKYLARKING.
The album also marked the end of the band's dealings with their original label, the beginning of protracted legal maneuverings, and a seven year gap in releases (ended with APPLE VENUS VOLUME ONE in 1999).
It's a shame the band were derailed by Virgin after this album, because they're on fire,in songwriting and performance terms.

Elvis Costello's “Spike” was on side A, and XTC's “Nonsuch” was on side B. I will always remember my brother telling me, “Check this song out!” and then playing “The Smartest Monkeys.” Then “My Bird Performs.” Then “The Disappointed.” I was hooked.
XTC's proper albums – from the punk-influenced “Drums and Wires” to the orchestral/electric double-albums “Apple Venus: Volume One” and “Wasp Star” -- showcased a band that was years ahead of its time.
And even though it seems less and less likely each day that XTC will release a new album (it's been six years since their last), their catalog stands as one of the finest in popular music.

The album was also released on cassette tape in several countries; side A of the cassette tape version contains the tracks on sides A and B of the vinyl version and side B contains the tracks on sides C and D of the vinyl version.
In most countries, the CD version of Nonsuch initially came in a "special limited edition gold etched CD case" (the term used in UK adverts) and the disc itself features a picture of the Nonsuch palace drawn in gold on a scarlet background.
Although the DAT masters of the songs, which were recorded solo by Andy in the Shed and did not feature The Dukes, were indeed supplied to the magazine before it folded, it seems that no flexis were actually pressed up.

Apropos of nothing in particular, I make no bones about my undying affection to XTC, a band that I consider not only the best to emerge from the post-punk era (barely beating out the Fall), but also one of the two or three best bands of the past 30 years.
One bit of evidence is 1992's elegant and brilliant Nonsuch, one of Partridge/Moulding's finest collections of songs and the late-period peak for the band---three years after psych-pop wonder Oranges and Lemons and the band's last release for seven years until the arch, orchestral, and very adult-ish Apple Venus.
I have been wanting to upgrade my cd's to the new remasters and Nonsuch is next on my list.

Nonsuch is probably my all-time favourite XTC album, and has been growing for almost seven years.
Colin Mouldings first attempt on this album is Frivolous Tonight, and it is with great sadness I have to say that this is the least interesting track on the record.
The slowest song of the album, The Last Balloon closes the record, and I am starting to long for some real rock'n'roll (and, it must be said, Andy Partridge's voice is beginning to get a little, you know, tiresome...).

Since Skylarking, each XTC album was carefully composed and crafted, and Nonsuch is no different.
Working with producer Gus Dudgeon (Elton John), XTC crafted their most immaculate album to date with Nonsuch.
A measured and reflective record, recalling the Beach Boys more than the Beatles, the album retains some of their late-'80s psychedelic flourishes, but those have been integrated into an elaborate, lush pop setting that falls somewhere between Skylarking and Oranges & Lemons.

Nonsuch is the difinitive work, worst either Big Express or Mummer but all have at least one great track on them.
Albums like English Settlement, The Big Express and O and L all have some fantastic songs, but are slightly let down by having some stocking-fillers which have you reaching for the CD remote.

After the release of the 1992 album Nonsuch, XTC disappeared, but it wasn't laziness that kept the venerable, prolific act from recording.
A bum record deal pushed the trio into the financial red, a situation that led its members to refuse to record under protest.
With sidekick Colin Moulding, who contributes two of the album's eleven songs, Partridge has crafted a superb album that largely relies upon strings and acoustic instruments.

I've always thought this album was a huge improvement on White Music - Ok, Barry's efforts let the thing down a bit but for 1978 the album as a whole was pretty avant garde and modern sounding - love the dub 12 inch too.
This album is perhaps the peak of XTC as predominately a guitar led band.
This album is overproduced, obviously, but I don't think it's QUITE as bad as you say it is. Most of the songs themselves overflow with too much studio trickery, but there are still a lot of good ideas here, and there are some good hooks buried under most of these gaudy concoctions.

The album showcased a flawless set of classic power-pop that included enduring XTC favourites including "Rocket From A Bottle," "No Language In Our Lungs," and "Towers Of London"; the strong material was greatly enhanced by more superb production and engineering by Lillywhite and Padgham.
Their 1992 album, ''Nonsuch'', (named after Henry VIII's fabled palace) united them with famed UK producer Gus Dudgeon and drummer Dave Mattacks, but soon after its release a contractual dispute with their label, Virgin Records, saw XTC go "on strike" from 1992 through 1998, finally resulting in the termination of their contract.
Having left Virgin, relations have improved and Andy Partridge is releasing a series of albums of "demos" of his songs (mainly from the Virgin years) under the title of ''Fuzzy Warbles'', on a new label imprint APE (Andy Partridge Experiments).

XTC quickly established themselves as a band that transcends either category with the angular, hook-filled "White Music" album, featuring the songs, unconventional guitar and voice of leader Andy Partridge, bassist/vocalist/songwriter Colin Moulding, quirky organ by Barry Andrews and drummer Terry Chambers.
He was replaced by guitarist/keyboardist Dave Gregory and in the first few years of the 80s, XTC produced the three albums, "Drums and Wires", "Black Sea", and "English Settlement" that firmly established them as one of England's "bands to watch".
Despite this seemingly career-ending move, the band, without the muscular drumming of the departing Chambers, continued issuing albums of stunning originality and depth, using hired hands to fill the drumstool.

Gus Dudgeon - Biography - AOL Music
Best known for his longtime collaboration with Elton John, producer Gus Dudgeon began his career during the mid-1960s as an engineer with Decca, where he worked on records from artists including the Rolling Stones, the Zombies, John Mayall, the Small Faces, Marianne Faithfull and Them.
Although John remained Dudgeon's primary creative focus throughout the 1970s, he also produced albums for Joan Armatrading, Ralph McTell, John Kongos and Chris Rea.
Another period of relative inactivity preceded Dudgeon's work on XTC's 1992 album Nonsuch; he was again absent from the spotlight for some time before agreeing to mix tracks for the Frank & Walters' 1996 LP The Grand Parade.

Their deal with Virgin Records was, they believed, unfair, and the company had failed to properly promote their 1992 album Nonsuch, so they refused to deliver another -- until finally, five years later, they were released from their contract.

It's been seven years since the quirky English pop poets in XTC released their last studio album, "Nonsuch," but now Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding have returned to release a new XTC record, "Apple Venus, Volume One."
The band has spent most of the last seven years embroiled in a bitter contract dispute with their U.K. label, Virgin Records, and had refused to record or even start definite work on a new album until they had been released from the label.
XTC says they hope to release their next album in about six months, and described "Apple Venus, Volume 2" as more of a straightforward rock & roll album.
