  Nontheism
Nontheism (or non-theism), broadly conceived, according to Caporale & Grumelli (1971), is the absence of belief in both the existence and non-existence of a deity (or deities, or other numinous phenomena).
Used in the strict sense, as by those who self-identify as nontheists or nontheistics, the term describes a particular worldview for which the question of divinity is regarded as irrelevant and meaningless.
This suggests that the Catholic church considers (or once considered) nontheism to be the innate condition of mankind, reflecting the estrangement of man from God inherent in original sin.

One subset of apatheism is apathetic agnosticism, a fusion of apatheism with strong agnosticism that adds to apatheism's lack of interest in whether deities exist the claim that it is impossible to ever know whether or not deities exist.
Agnostic atheism is a fusion of atheism or nontheism with agnosticism, the epistemological position that the existence or nonexistence of deities is unknown (weak agnosticism) or unknowable (strong agnosticism).
When nontheism is combined with strong gnosticism, it denotes the belief that it is rational to be absolutely certain that deities do not, and perhaps cannot, exist.

My take on ``nontheism,'' which isn't in any dictionary I've consulted, is that the word should be construed rather literally to mean the opposite of theism.
I also am grateful for the support that was given at the Nontheism Workshop at FGC last summer which has enabled me to speak out about being atheist.
Last year's workshop on ``Nontheism Among Friends'' was as riveting and life-changing as I indicated in our first newsletter.

Ignosticism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is sufficient to say that the idea of God as a being makes no sense.
For most purposes, this view may be considered a form of agnosticism, falling under the general category of nontheism.
From this approach, the "I don't know" of agnosticism ceases to mean "I don't know if God exists or not" and becomes "I don't know what you're talking about when you talk about God." This underlies the form of the word: ignosticism, indicating an ignorance of what is meant by a claim of God's existence.

Nontheism, which is pretty much my attitude, is an observation that invisible spirits and demons aren’t required to live your life.
For instance, an agnostic could conclude that the existence of gods can’t be proven, but as an act of faith, he could choose to believe in one or more of them anyway.
Nontheism is an operational approach to living, not a conviction.

 Cowardice and Religiocity
The words were a new relaxation of thought for me. For years, I have debated what it was to be religious, especially when relating to humanism.
Humanism has always taken a view of "nontheism," a seemingly careful word stating its disassociation from theism: careful in respect of not necessarily wanting to declare an atheist (nonbelief in God) attitude, but wanting to make clear its concern with the belief in God.
This does not mean letting go the ethic of nontheism that is so crucial to focusing on this mortal, mundane, life.

You say "Defending nontheism is not automatically at odds with all forms of theism." I think we can all defend tolerance, and the idea that the government should not be dictating beliefs.
The hidden assumption is 'the best way to promote nontheism is to have only nontheists do it', which may or may not be the case but is currently unsupported in either case.
First, I don't see that defending and promoting nontheism neccessarily requires the affirmation that nontheism is the most perfect, superior worldview in the world.
