peaceful turmoil: To be or not to be secular, a humanist, or a secular humanist
Nontheists and atheists, despite some depictions to the contrary, are not all (or even mostly) hedonistic anarchists who disregard the law and general rules of conduct.
Nontheists, theists, and atheists alike who are sane appreciate that their actions have consequences, and therefore all qualify for the third requirement of moral potential.
Nontheists and atheists are no less moral than any theist, especially those who claim that it is the fear of damnation or the reward of paradise that motivates them to treat others with love and respect and kindness.

Nontheists are the last minority that can be openly hated with impunity.
Nontheists lack the resources to challenge such legal discrimination and violations of Constitutional separation of religion from government.
The problem is not a lack of Constitutional authority to separate church from state or to treat nontheists equally.

NONTHEISM FACTS AND INFORMATION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Used in the strict sense, as by those who self-identify as ''nontheists'' or ''nontheistics'', the term describes a particular worldview for which the question of divinity is regarded as irrelevant and meaningless.
When faced with the question of whether gods exist, a nontheist would respond that the question itself is unimportant, that it concerns information that is unfalsifiable, unmeaningful, superfluous, etc. To a nontheist, the issue of God's existence is no different than, for example, the existence of leprechauns.
Obviously, nontheists reject the latter belief, since they presume belief in a deity to be a mere social construction, with no relation to nature and biology.

The End of Pascal's Wager: Only Nontheists Go to Heaven
And the only two kinds of people who do this are those theists and nontheists who devote their lives to examining the facts and determining whether they are right.
It is a common belief that certain mysteries, like unexplained evils in the world and god's silence, are to be explained as a test, and this is a reasonable belief, widely defended by theists of many varieties.
The only way to truly test human beings is to see if we will become nontheists after serious and sincere inquiry into these matters: to see if we have the courage and fortitude to choose morality over faith or loyalty, and be good without fear or hope of divine reward.

 Morality Without Religion
Because nontheists do not want to be murdered, robbed, raped, or otherwise injured, they support laws prohibiting those types of harmful acts.
By the same token, their desire to be treated fairly, honestly, and respectfully leads them to advocate laws and rules of conduct that promote fair, honest, and respectful treatment of people.
Nontheists also have reasons for doing good to those they do not know and probably never will know.

Drange has considerable sympathy with the view of such nontheists as Michael Martin and Kai Nielsen that the concept of the god of the philosophers is deeply problematical, possibly contradictory or incoherent to the point of unintelligibility.
Nontheists have a considerable burden to show that the existence of even the god of evangelical Christianity is highly improbable, given the existence of evil, though Drange does think that AE is capable of doing so.
In spite of the efforts of nontheists like the late J.L. Mackie, it takes considerable work to show that even an omnipotent being could create a world in which no suffering or premature death are possible.

Why Be Moral? A Dilemma for Nontheists?
Now from a "public relations" standpoint, it might be bad for nontheists to adopt such nihilism.
One could be an intuitionist and hold that rightness or wrongness are objective, non-natural properties that supervene upon certain acts, policies, etc. Such intuitionism has been regarded as metaphysically extravagant by its critics, but it certainly seems no more extravagant than to invoke the God of the "omni" predicates as a basis for moral realism.
All nontheists can do is point out, correctly I think, that bad people usually have rotten lives.

A Big Bang Cosmological Argument For God's Nonexistence (1992)
Motivated by concerns such as Broad's, some of the few nontheists who have been vocal on this subject have gone so far as to deny, without due justification, central tenets of big bang cosmology.
Nontheists are not faced only with the alternatives of embarrassed silence, confessions of impotence, epigrammatic dismissals or 'denial' when confronted with the apparently radical implications of big bang cosmology.
It will be admitted that this objection seems to have a certain force to it, inasmuch as it has seemed compelling to some nontheists (such as C. Broad, quoted in the introduction) and has provoked in them various reactions of denial, embarrassment and silence when faced with the implications of big bang cosmology.

First, the atheist may believe that the probability of a God who torments nonbelievers in the afterlife is so small that she does not worry about it, even if she is inclined to take some other view of God seriously.
To many nontheists, the idea of "deciding" to believe in God is simply no more of a live option than "deciding" to believe that the earth is flat.
To be sure, a nontheist could engage in theistic practices in an attempt to cultivate theistic belief, but it is not even clear that on the relevant view of God such an attempt at self-deception would suffice to gain salvation.

Harris opines that religion has become so outdated and dangerous that those inclined toward reason-based beliefs and values should make a concerted effort to toss all faith-based religious thinking--not just fundamentalist but moderate religion as well--into the trash heap of history.
This kind of talk is controversial even within the secular community, where many believe that nontheists should stand together with moderate religionists to confront fundamentalism.
To add to the provocation, Harris is brash and unapologetic not just in his central thesis--that traditional religion has outlived its usefulness--but also in his ancillary arguments, where his targets include much more than religionists.
