  NONZERO by Robert Wright
The title of this book, Nonzero, refers to the concept of the "non-zero-sum," which comes from game theory.
Looking at human history--and for that matter the whole history of life on earth--through the lenses of game theory can change your view of life.
Fortune magazine names Nonzero one of the best books in the history of the universe (or something like that)

Nonzero: The Logic of Human Destiny - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nonzero: The Logic of Human Destiny is a book by Robert Wright originally published in 2000.
It argues that biological evolution and cultural evolution are shaped and directed first and foremost by "non-zero-sumness," that is, the prospect of creating new situations that are not zero-sum.
Wright acknowledges several of these criticisms within Nonzero itself and in turn responds with his purpose in writing the book--that by acknowledging options to reap non-zero-sum gains, societies might work to decrease zero-sum losses, like the loss of resources used in the pursuit of armed conflict.

Euclidean domain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
If a and b are in D and b is nonzero, then there are q and r in D such that a = bq + r and either r = 0 or v(r) < v(b).
For each nonzero power series f, define v(f) as the degree of the smallest power of X occurring in f.
In fact, if I is a nonzero ideal of a Euclidean domain D and a nonzero a in I is chosen to minimize v(a) over all elements of I, then I = aD.

One of the interesting insights in Nonzero is the great survival value of forgiveness.
Nonzero's discussion of iterated prisoners dilemmas, based on Axelrod's work is interesting, in that it explains the advantages of the 'Tit for Tat' strategy, but more recent research shows that more forgiving strategies win out in the long run, especially over generations.
In the email section he somehow repeats the original version of a little back and forth we had on my sadly-neglected Nonzero blog, implying I retracted it, when in fact we both forgot which blog it was on.

In Nonzero Robert Wright argues convincingly that certain patterns in biological and cultural evolution cannot properly be attributed to contingency or accident but rather point to an underlying teleology—for him, a fully naturalized teleology.
The nonzero dynamic is probabilistic and statistical; it says where history as a whole is heading without guaranteeing where any item of history may end up.
Although the nonzero dynamic is supposed to assimilate both to a common framework, Wright’s treatment of the two is actually quite different.

Nonzero, from New Republic writer Robert Wright, is a difficult and important book--well worth reading--addressing the controversial question of purpose in evolution.
I was particularly taken by the chapters on biological complexity, even if the author was unable to deliver the knock-out blow of describing why evolution does what it does, why it has a direction...but then again, that would have won him a Nobel.

In a nonzero sum game, the players end up better off, on average and over the long run, if they adopt a cooperative strategy.
Because nonzero sum games yield a higher average payoff over the long run, they attract more players.
A key point of the book is that a game that is nonzero sum overall may nevertheless contain zero sum components.

A sparse matrix is a matrix having a relatively small number of nonzero elements.
Unless all the rows of sparse matrix A contain approximately the same number of nonzero elements, this storage mode requires a large amount of storage.
Because this storage mode requires entire diagonals to be stored, if the nonzero elements in matrix A are not concentrated along a few diagonals, this storage mode requires a large amount of storage.

Book Review: Nonzero: The Logic of Human Destiny by Robert Wright | The Foundation for Economic Education: The Freeman, ...
In Nonzero: The Logic of Human Destiny, Robert Wright argues that gains from trade, or “nonzero” transactions, is the motivating force driving human history.
Because of the advantages of engaging in nonzero-sum transactions, it was virtually inevitable that living organisms would evolve whose primary function would be to capitalize on the benefits of nonzero trading opportunities.
Wright divides the book into three basic parts that elaborate the idea of the centrality of nonzero interactions to the trajectory of human history.

With the algorithm I use, I simply look at the rightmost nonzero digits and add or subtract multiples of the number I am dividing by to make the last digits 0.

Drift mirror instability in space plasmas: 2. Nonzero electron temperature effects
A linear theory of drift mirror instability accounting for the nonzero electron temperature effects is developed.
The origin of the electric field is due to the electron pressure gradient which builds up in a plasma with nonzero electron temperature, because the electrons are dragged by mirror-accelerated protons as they pass from regions of high magnetic flux into those of lower magnetic flux.
It is shown that in a plasma with nonzero electron temperature the drift mirror mode is accompanied by the field-aligned current which varies in phase with the compressional changes in the magnetic field.
