 Major Bushfires in Victoria
Widespread fires occurred across the Western District of Victoria, mostly in grasslands.
Eighty seven fires were started by lightning in the north east of Victoria on 8 January 2003.
Eight of these fires were unable to be contained and joined together to form the largest fire in Victoria since the 1939 "Black Friday" bushfires.

The Toorongo Falls Reserve, near Noojee, is a picturesque area of 16 hectors beside the Toorongo and little Toorongo Rivers in tall mountain forest.
There was a terminus at Noojee, to which large amounts of timber were transported from mills scattered through the forest by means of a network of timber tramlines, heading to the west and to the north.

Fire Protection Plans are prepared within the context of the Code of Practice for Fire Management on Public Land to ensure that wildfire prevention and suppression activities on public land are conducted in an effective, operationally safe, environmentally sensitive and cost-efficient manner.
The Fire Operations Plans detail proposed uses of prescribed fire (for fuel management and/or ecological reasons), new fire preparedness works (such as the establishment of tracks or helipads), and a summary of fire-related education programs to be conducted in the area.
All prescribed burns on public land in Victoria are conducted in accordance with strategic Fire Protection Plans prepared with community involvement.

It is on the route between Lilydale and Warburton, and a road branches southwards from Yarra Junction to the timber towns of Noojee and Powelltown.
Yarra Junction was a conveyance point for timber brought in by bush tram from Noojee, Powelltown, Britannia Creek and several smaller settlements to the south-east.
Its growth began to approach Warburton's, and in 1910 the administrative centre for the Upper Yarra shire was shared with Warburton, and later transferred to Yarra Junction.
