  Howstuffworks "What is a Nor'easter?"
Nor'easters can occur in the eastern United States any time between October and April, when moisture and cold air are plentiful.
A Nor'easter is named for the winds that blow in from the northeast and drive the storm up the east coast along the Gulf Stream, a band of warm water that lies off the Atlantic coast.
The thing to remember with Nor'easters is that the storm systems occur frequently, but only a few of them are powerful enough to make it into the news.

  Reference.com/Encyclopedia/Nor'easter
Nor'easters are usually formed by an area of vorticity associated with an upper level disturbance or from a kink in a frontal surface that causes a surface low pressure area to develop.
For decades, Edgar Comee, of Brunswick, Maine, waged a determined battle against use of the term "nor’easter" by the press, which usage he considered “a pretentious and altogether lamentable affectation” and “the odious, even loathsome, practice of landlubbers who would be seen as salty as the sea itself”.
Liberman posits that "nor’easter" may have originally been a literary affectation, akin to "e'en" for "even" and "th'only" for "the only", which is an indication in spelling that two syllables count for only one position in metered verse, with no implications for actual pronunciation.

A Nor'easter is counter-clock wise turning cyclone (a storm system circulating around a center) as opposed to a hurricane which turns right in the northern hemisphere.
Nor'easters are spawned by a very curvy Jet Stream that dips far south allowing cold arctic air to meet warm air.
What nor'easter don't achieve in wind-speed as compared with hurricanes, they achieve in duration (up to a week) and size (up to 1000 miles or more in diameter).

 Noreaster - WHOI
When questions were raised by local communities about the potential impacts of effluent discharge from an offshore outfall in the relatively pristine waters of outer Massachusetts Bay and Cape Cod Bay, Sea Grant supported several investigations that examined key features of coastal processes in the area.
The results obtained were valuable in establishing monitoring programs in the vicinity of the outfall and developing predictive models on long-term consequences of wastewater input (see Nor’easter 2(2), 1990; 4(1), 1992; and 9(1), 1997).
In the Northeast, biotechnology research is directed at helping scientists and managers understand endangered fish stocks (see Nor’easter 7(1), 1995) and assisting in the identification and early warning of harmful algal blooms.

 Annual "Noreaster" [Archive] - Jeepz.com
I don’t understand, though, why the Weather Channel peeps are referring to the impending storm as a nor’easter.
Apparently, a nor'easter is named for the wind direction during the storm (wind being named for the direction from which it blows) as opposed to the compass direction of storm travel.
"Nor'easter" is a variant of "northeaster," which refers to a storm that often deepens off the mid-Atlantic coast and then moves up the coast toward New England, causing gale-force winds from the northeast, coastal flooding from abnormally high tides, and heavy rain or snow."
