 Magic Mushroom Chemistry
The primary active ingredients of Psilocybe mushrooms are (surprise!) psilocybin and psilocin, and to a lesser extent baeocystin and norbaeocystin.
In other words, baeocystin and norbaeocystin are just psilocybin with one methyl and two methyls respectively lopped off.
And unfortunately for all you synthesis experts, while baeocystin and norbaeocystin do not have DEA control numbers they do both come under the Controlled Substance Analogue Act.

Psilocybe and others (Group PIM G027)
3.3.1 Name(s) The main toxins are psilocybin, psilocin, baeocystin and norbaeocystin.
Psilocybin, psilocin, baeocystin and norbaeocystin are all indoles which are derivates from tryptamin.
They are thought to act by altering the concentration of indoles, including serotonin, in the central nervous system and thus interfering with the transmission and processing of external stimuli (Young et al., 1982).

The tryptamine alkaloids in entheogenic mushroom species are known as psilocybin and/or psilocin.
Other tryptamine alkaloids known to occur in psilocybian mushrooms include baeocystin and norbaeocystin.
Both alkaloids produce symtoms and effects similar to psilocybin.

This fatal outcome was caused by Psilocybe baeocystis Singer and Smith.
The higher toxicity of this mushroom is due to the presence of baeocystin and norbaeocystin which has a bad reputation in the United States where its use is inadvisable.
Eventually, some varieties of Psilocybe semilanceata are considered in the United States as being very `potent', their toxic effects being attributed to their high contents in baeocystin and norbaeocystin.

 DRUG TYPES
They have retained their popularity partly because they are seen as a 'natural' high and also because they cost nothing to obtain.
The primary active ingredients of Psilocybe mushrooms are psilocybin and psilocin - and to a lesser extent baeocystin and norbaeocystin.
These chemicals bear a close resemblance to the neurotransmitter serotonin and the hallucinogenic effect of psilocybe mushrooms is probably caused by their interference with the normal actions of brain seretonin.

And then we have baeocystin's close chemical cousin, Norbaeocystin.

You will probaly find references to studies in this book (aviable from Rosetta).
