INEOS Oxide - Products - Ethylidene Norbornene
The use of ENB is derived from the norbornene double bond which copolymerises with ethylene and propylene to produce an ethylene-propylene-terpolymer that contains the ethylidene double bond as residual unsaturation.
Novel norbornenes, pioneered by INEOS Oxide, are also being used in a host of emerging technologies including high performance cyclic olefin copolymers for electronic and optical applications, in new types of EPDM rubbers, in agrochemicals and in pharmaceuticals.
Laboratory and small pilot plant reaction/distillation facilities are available for the manufacture of novel bespoke norbornenes, based on the reaction of dicyclopentadiene with a host of unsaturated compounds.

Norbornene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Norbornene or norbornylene or norcamphene is a bridged cyclic hydrocarbon.
Norbornenes are important monomers in ring-opening metathesis polymerizations (ROMP) with for instance the Grubbs catalyst.

It has already been demonstrated that bicyclo[2,2,1]heptene (norbornene) is one of the most versatile model olefins in studies of the role of reagent structure of electron acceptor type E–L reagents on the course of the addition reaction.
It is known that the  relative rates of the norbornene / cyclohexene pair are much more dependent on the nature of the reagent, and therefore on the type of the intermediate (three-centered, four-centered, etc.) than in the case of the cyclopentene / cyclohexene pair.
N-bromosuccinimide (crystallized from acetonitrile), norbornene (sublimed), cyclopentene and cyclohexene (distilled) and the solvents (distilled) were obtained from commercial sources.

Norbornene – No longer a rare chemical
The bridged ring puts extra strain on the double bond, making it highly reactive. Therefore, many opportunities are given to modify the basic norbornene molecule or to incorporate it into bigger molecules, such as COC or other polymers.
Norbornene is made by the Diels-Alder reaction of cyclopentadiene and ethylene, two commonly available hydrocarbons.
It has various uses in general organic synthesis, and because of its combination of strong odor and low toxicity, it is also used as an odorant.

Process for producing norbornene derivative having organosilyl group - Patent 6777570
The present invention relates to a process for producing a norbornene derivative having an organosilyl group suitable as a synthetic intermediate for pesticides and medicaments and as a monomer for use in polyolefin polymers, particularly polyolefin polymers having a good adhesiveness with metals or insulating inorganic materials.
In the invention, an objective norbornene derivative having an organosilyl group is produced by reacting a norbornene compound having a halosilyl group with a specific Grignard agent.
The norbornene compound having a halosilyl group to be used as a starting material for the invention is represented by the above general formula (1).

Copolymerization of Ethene with Norbornene Derivatives Using Neutral Nickel Catalysts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
The copolymerization of ethene with norbornene derivatives, as well as their terpolymerization with 1-alkenes, using a series of neutral, square-planar nickel complexes containing anionic P~O chelates is described.
With norbornene derivatives bearing oxygen functionalities, the level of incorporation is lower, as are the reaction rates and polymer molecular weights.
In the case of terpolymerization of ethene and norbornene with 1-alkenes, the polymer molecular weights tend to be low because of slower monomer insertion and additional chain-transfer pathways that are available following 1-alkene insertion.

 Norbornene from Dicyclopentandiene and Ethylene
Norbornene, or bicyclo[2.2.1]-2-heptene, has been used to make polymers in a number of elastomer applications in the past.
In recent commercial applications, norbornene has been used to make cyclic olefin copolymers—a new class of engineering polymers with a unique balance of properties, including low density; high transparency; and resistance to heat, water, and chemicals.
Norbornene is produced from the reaction of ethylene and cyclopentadiene (CPD) via the Diels-Alder condensation process.

A model study with four norbornene derivatives with different groups connecting a functional unit to the norbornene reveals that those so called anchor groups influence the polymerisation rate constants of ROM polymerisations.
The observed effects are explained by different tendencies of the anchor groups to coordinate to the ruthenium centre during the resting state of the propagation.
This approach has been chosen to guarantee a similar steric demand of all monomers under investigation without the need for separation of stereoisomers or utilization of diasteroselective reaction pathways.

The observed exo-stereoselectivity is not surprising because almost all of these coupling methods utiltise norbornene-fused BLOCKS as one of the cycloaddends and from theoretical and experimental reports, it is known that norbornene shows exo-stereoselectivity in most reactions, particulary cycloadditions.
It was found that fused norbornene, 7-oxanorbornene and benzonorbornadienes can act as one building BLOCK (A-BLOCK) and fused cyclobutene epoxide as the other (B-BLOCK).
